The short answer for MT models
On an Avanti MT microwave, the door carries three interlock switches behind its latch assembly, and they are wired so that a door which is not properly shut cannot allow the oven to run. Most door complaints on this line are a latch hook or a hinge that has worn, and the safe response to all of them is the same.
What you actually observe
- The choke seal channel around the door is dirty or damaged — That channel is part of what contains the energy; food residue in it should be cleaned, damage should not be ignored.
- Arcing or burn marks around the door frame — A serious sign that should take the oven out of service immediately.
- The latch hooks look bent or worn — The plastic hooks are consumable and they are what operate the switches.
- The door has to be pressed or lifted before the oven will run — The latch hooks are no longer aligning with their switches.
- A rattle from the door while the oven runs — A loose latch assembly or a broken hook rattling in its housing.
- NEAR MISS — the oven will not start at all — A start fault, which is a different list, although a door switch is on both.
Causes on MT, most likely first
- Latch hooks worn or broken — Ranked first because they are the part that operates the interlocks and the part that takes every closing of the door.
- Door spring broken — The door falls open or will not stay shut, depending on the design.
- Hinge worn or dropped — The door no longer sits square, so the latch and the seal face both meet the cabinet wrongly.
- Door switch actuator broken — The hook moves and the switch no longer sees it.
- Door itself distorted — Often after the door has been used as a handle to move the oven, and it cannot be corrected by adjustment.
Working through it in order
- Before anything else — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: zero of the five causes above cost nothing to rule out on MT models, so they come first.
- Look at the seal channel round the door for residue or damage — Residue is cleanable. Damage is not, and it takes the oven out of service.
- Try to move the door up and down at the handle — Play at the hinge means the door will not present the latch to its switches reliably.
- Open and close the door slowly and watch the latch hooks — Bent, worn or broken hooks are visible from outside and are the commonest cause here.
Before you do anything else, unplug it
Safety
Unplug the microwave at the socket before you examine anything, and keep the case closed. The capacitor in the high-voltage section can hold a lethal charge after the power is off. Do not run the oven empty, do not defeat any door interlock, and take the appliance out of service entirely if the door is damaged or the oven runs with the door ajar — the door is what contains the energy.
