The short answer for B models
On an Avanti B microwave, the door carries three interlock switches behind its latch assembly, and they are wired so that a door which is not properly shut cannot allow the oven to run. Most door complaints on this line are a latch hook or a hinge that has worn, and the safe response to all of them is the same.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The door falls open or is hard to open — The hinge, the spring or the latch, depending on which way it fails.
- The door does not sit flush in its frame — A dropped hinge or a distorted door, both of which change how the seal face meets the cabinet.
- The choke seal channel around the door is dirty or damaged — That channel is part of what contains the energy; food residue in it should be cleaned, damage should not be ignored.
- Arcing or burn marks around the door frame — A serious sign that should take the oven out of service immediately.
- NEAR MISS — the oven runs normally but food is cold — That is a heating failure and it belongs on that page.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Latch hooks worn or broken — Ranked first because they are the part that operates the interlocks and the part that takes every closing of the door.
- Door spring broken — The door falls open or will not stay shut, depending on the design.
- Cabinet distorted in its housing — Common on a built-in or over-range installation that has moved.
- Interlock switch failed — Second: three switches in series behind the latch, and a single failure produces exactly the intermittent behaviour owners describe.
Check in this order, and why
- Before anything else — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: zero of the four named above can be settled on B models before a tool comes out.
- Stop using the oven before testing anything — Every fault on this page involves the part that contains the energy, and that changes the order of everything else.
- Open and close the door slowly and watch the latch hooks — Bent, worn or broken hooks are visible from outside and are the commonest cause here.
- Check whether the latch assembly is loose in the door — A rattle and intermittent operation together usually mean screws have backed out.

Unplug the microwave at the socket before you examine anything, and keep the case closed. The capacitor in the high-voltage section can hold a lethal charge after the power is off. Do not run the oven empty, do not defeat any door interlock, and take the appliance out of service entirely if the door is damaged or the oven runs with the door ajar — the door is what contains the energy.
