The short answer for MT models
An Avanti MT microwave that beeps and does nothing has acknowledged the press and refused it. That is a different fault from a dead panel, and the reason is usually shown on the display if you look before pressing anything else.
What you actually observe
- The display is lit but start does nothing — Power is fine and something is inhibiting the start.
- The display shows a clock prompt or a demonstration message — Some ovens will not cook until the clock is set or the demonstration mode is cleared.
- The breaker trips when start is pressed — An electrical fault, and it takes priority over everything on this page.
- The display is completely dead — No power at the oven, or its own supply has failed.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and runs but food is cold — That is a heating failure and it belongs on that page.
Likely causes on MT, ordered
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because three interlocks sit behind the latch in series and any one of them stops the oven while the display looks normal.
- Clock not set or demonstration mode active — Some ovens refuse to cook until either is resolved, and both are free to fix.
- Control board failure — Last on the list and reached only by exclusion.
- Vents blocked on a built-in installation — The owner-fixable cause of the thermal protector operating.
The order that saves the most time
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on MT models, so they come first.
- Stop if the oven only starts when the door is pressed — That is an interlock fault, and the oven should be taken out of service rather than persuaded to run.
- Try several different buttons on the panel — Some responding and others not points at the membrane rather than at the control.
- Note whether it works from cold and refuses when warm — That is a thermal protector, and the cause is usually blocked vents.
Why the case stays on
Safety
Switch the oven off at the socket and unplug it. On a microwave the high-voltage section holds a charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and that charge is lethal. There is no owner-serviceable part inside the case and no safe way to establish that the capacitor has discharged without the right tool. Clean the cavity and the door seal face; leave everything else alone, and never run the oven with a door that does not latch.
