The short answer for VFR models
Most noise on an Avanti VFR freezer is mechanical rather than refrigeration. The sealed system makes a hiss and a gurgle and always has; what is new is almost certainly a fan, a mount, a basket or a foot.
What the owner sees
- Baskets or dividers buzzing against the liner — The cheapest fault here and the easiest to mistake for something serious.
- A rattle that stops when you press down on the lid or door — The cabinet is not sitting flat, or a basket is resting against the liner.
- A hiss or gurgle shortly after the unit stops — Refrigerant equalising. Normal, and it has always done it.
- A drumming that is worse on a wooden floor — Vibration being transmitted into the floor structure rather than absorbed under the cabinet.
- NEAR MISS — the compartment is also warming — Then the noise is secondary and the cooling-failure page is where this is diagnosed.
Likely causes on VFR, ordered
- Cabinet not sitting flat on the floor — Ranked first on this class because a freezer is rarely moved and floors settle around it.
- Floor structure resonating — Common on suspended timber floors and solved by a mat rather than by any repair to the freezer.
- Condenser fouled with dust — On fan-cooled models this unbalances the blade and makes the fan run longer for the same heat.
- Lid or door hinge dry — A creak on opening rather than a running noise, and the only one on this list you hear only when you use the machine.
The order that saves the most time
- The order, and why it is this one — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: four of the four named above can be settled on VFR models before a tool comes out.
- Slide a mat under the cabinet as a test — On a timber floor this alone can halve the noise, which tells you the floor was the amplifier.
- Listen for a click without a start — That is the relay, and it is the one noise on this list that predicts a loss of cooling.
- Put a hand flat on the compressor shell — Vibration you feel through the metal rather than hear points at the mounts beneath it.
The rules for working on a freezer
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and treat every capacitor as charged. On a freezer the specific hazard is the temptation to speed a defrost up: hot air from an unattended heater, a blade against the coil or a hammer against ice all end in a punctured evaporator. Warm water, a cloth and time are the only safe tools for that job.

When to call a technician
Call a technician once the owner checks are clean, or immediately if the compressor is running continuously without the cabinet getting cold. That state wears the compressor while it fails to help, so there is nothing gained by waiting.
