The short answer for VFR models
Water around an Avanti VFR freezer is nearly always defrost melt that has not found its drain. Every freezer makes melt, either on a schedule or when you defrost it by hand; if the drain channel is blocked, frozen or aimed at the wrong place, that water appears on the floor instead of in the pan.
What it looks like from the outside
- Water arriving only in warm weather — More humidity means more condensate than the drain path can handle.
- A puddle at the front of the cabinet — The usual place melt appears when the drain channel is blocked or the unit is tipped forward.
- Water only after a manual defrost — Melt volume that the channel and the pan were not designed to take in one go.
- A musty smell from the compartment — Standing water in the channel that never drains away.
- NEAR MISS — water appears only when the lid is opened — Condensation on the lid underside dripping off, which is normal in a humid room.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Drain channel or hole blocked — Ranked first because it is the only path the melt has and because packaging fragments end up in it on every model.
- Defrost system faulty on a frost-free model — The least common of these and the only one that needs a technician to confirm.
- Manual defrost done too fast — A large volume of melt at once overwhelms a channel sized for a slow thaw.
- Drain frozen — Second: once a slow drain holds water through a cold cycle it freezes solid and blocks every cycle afterwards.
Check in this order, and why
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on VFR models, so they come first.
- Mop the water and watch where it returns — Front, back or inside tells you which third of this list to read, and nothing else does.
- Check the cabinet is level, slightly low at the back — That is the attitude the drain channel is designed around.
- Judge how thick the frost layer is — Thick frost melts at its edges every time the lid opens, and that water has to go somewhere.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start relay on a freezer sits directly on the compressor terminals. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with anything metal: puncturing a coil ends the life of the appliance in one stroke and releases refrigerant into the room.

When to call a technician
Call a technician once the owner checks are clean, or immediately if the compressor is running continuously without the cabinet getting cold. That state wears the compressor while it fails to help, so there is nothing gained by waiting.
