The short answer for AV models
Most noise on an Avanti AV freezer is mechanical rather than refrigeration. The sealed system makes a hiss and a gurgle and always has; what is new is almost certainly a fan, a mount, a basket or a foot.
What the owner sees
- A rattle that stops when you press down on the lid or door — The cabinet is not sitting flat, or a basket is resting against the liner.
- A hum that has turned into a buzz you feel through the floor — Compressor mounts that have hardened with age and no longer absorb vibration.
- A whine that has grown louder over weeks — A drying bearing, and the gradual onset is the only warning you get.
- Baskets or dividers buzzing against the liner — The cheapest fault here and the easiest to mistake for something serious.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and not cold — No hum at all is a power or start-relay fault, not a noise fault.
Likely causes on AV, ordered
- Cabinet not sitting flat on the floor — Ranked first on this class because a freezer is rarely moved and floors settle around it.
- Floor structure resonating — Common on suspended timber floors and solved by a mat rather than by any repair to the freezer.
- Condenser fouled with dust — On fan-cooled models this unbalances the blade and makes the fan run longer for the same heat.
- Lid or door hinge dry — A creak on opening rather than a running noise, and the only one on this list you hear only when you use the machine.
What to look at first, second, third
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: four of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on AV models, so they come first.
- Slide a mat under the cabinet as a test — On a timber floor this alone can halve the noise, which tells you the floor was the amplifier.
- Rock the cabinet gently at each corner — Any movement means a foot is unloaded, which is the single commonest cause on this class.
- Put a hand flat on the compressor shell — Vibration you feel through the metal rather than hear points at the mounts beneath it.
Isolate it, empty it, then look
Safety
Pull the plug or switch off at the breaker before any panel is disturbed, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Empty the freezer before you move it and get a second pair of hands: a full chest freezer is beyond what one person should lift or tilt. Never chip at frost with metal and never leave a heater running unattended inside the cabinet.

Call when the condenser is clean, the seal is proved and a full defrost has not restored temperature. That combination has eliminated everything an owner can reach, and what remains is behind the base panel or in the sealed system.
