The short answer for WQP models
Poor cleaning on an Avanti WQP dishwasher divides cleanly. Food left on the dishes means the wash is not reaching them; a white film on otherwise clean dishes means water chemistry and rinse aid; and grit redeposited everywhere means the filter.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Detergent left undissolved in the dispenser — The dispenser did not open, or the water was too cool to dissolve it.
- Only the bottom rack cleans properly — The feed to the upper arm is blocked, often by a tall item sitting in its path.
- Only the top rack cleans properly — The upper spray arm is fed, the lower is blocked, or something is stopping the lower arm turning.
- Cloudy glasses that do not wipe clean — Etching, which is permanent and comes from very soft water with too much detergent.
- A white chalky film on glasses and cutlery — Water hardness and rinse aid rather than a mechanical fault.
- NEAR MISS — water on the kitchen floor — A leak is the priority, whatever the wash quality is like.

- Filter silted with food waste — Ranked first because the filter is the one part this machine asks the owner to clean and the one part almost nobody does.
- Drain not clearing between fills — Dirty water carried into the next fill means the machine starts the rinse already soiled.
- Rinse aid empty or set too low — The commonest cause of film and spotting once the wash itself is fine.
- Wash pump or diverter failing — Last and least likely, and the only one on this list that needs the machine out and a technician.
The order that saves the most time
- Where to begin — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: two of the four named above can be settled on WQP models before a tool comes out.
- Look at how the bottom rack was loaded — Large flat items across the rack shadow everything behind them, which looks exactly like a pump fault.
- Look for standing water in the bottom before a cycle — Water left from last time means the machine starts dirty every run.
- Check the rinse aid reservoir — An empty reservoir explains film and spotting without anything being wrong with the wash.
- Spin both spray arms by hand through a full turn — Anything that stops them, or a jet you can see is blocked, is directly costing you coverage.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker or unplug, then close the water supply valve. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a dishwasher the sharpest hazard is glass: broken fragments collect in the sump under the filter and they are invisible in standing water, so wear a glove and use a torch rather than feeling around.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
