The short answer for WQP models
On the WQP line the commonest reason a machine will not start is the door not latching fully. The latch has to make a switch before anything else happens, and a rack pushed slightly proud or a seal that has swollen is enough to stop it.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The machine starts only if the door is pressed hard — The latch is marginal and will stop working entirely before long.
- It stops immediately after starting — It began and aborted, which is a different fault from never starting.
- The panel is completely dead — No power reaching the machine, or its own supply has failed.
- The cycle light comes on but no water enters — It has started and is waiting for a fill that is not happening.
- NEAR MISS — it runs and leaks — Shut the water off and read the leak page; that one comes first.
Causes on WQP, most likely first
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because the latch operates a switch that gates everything else, and a rack pushed proud is enough to stop it making.
- Door latch switch failed — The latch feels normal and the switch behind it no longer makes, which is the harder version of the first cause.
- Thermal cut-out open — Explains a machine that starts from cold and refuses later the same day.
- Control board failure — Last and least likely, and the only one on this list that cannot be confirmed without a technician.
The order that saves the most time
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — On WQP models, one of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Test the socket with something else, or check the breaker — If the circuit is dead the machine is not the fault yet.
- Look at the panel before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or counting down are four different faults and the panel tells you which for free.
- Look for a lock indicator and hold the lock button to clear it — Locked machines ignore every other press by design, so nothing else can be tested first.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker or unplug, then close the water supply valve. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a dishwasher the sharpest hazard is glass: broken fragments collect in the sump under the filter and they are invisible in standing water, so wear a glove and use a torch rather than feeling around. Leave the door interlock alone.

When to call a technician
A technician is needed when the answer lies under the tub — the sump seal, the wash pump, the heater, the fill valve — or when the fault involves both water and electricity at once. Everything above that line is a quarter of an hour with a brush and a torch. Close the supply valve first if anything is leaking, then call.
