The short answer
When an apartment-size refrigerator stops producing ice, examine one thing first: the freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest. It is both the likeliest cause and the cheapest to rule out. Next on the list: the bail arm or level sensor is in the off position. Nothing here needs a panel off until the last item.
What you observe
- The bin or the trays are empty and stay empty — Whether it stopped abruptly or tailed off already splits the list.
- Ice cream in the same freezer has gone soft — The whole compartment is warm, not just the ice maker.
- Ice stopped after the freezer was last filled up — Loading the freezer is what moves the arm.
- Cubes are small, hollow or only part-formed — The mould is being underfilled rather than not filled.

Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest — First, and it surprises people: an ice maker does not fill on a timer, it fills after the mould has reached its harvest temperature. Let the freezer drift even slightly warm and the cycle simply never completes — the machine is not broken, it is waiting.

Check in this order, and why
- Check that the freezer is genuinely hard-frozen — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
- Look at the bail arm and clear anything leaning on it — Arm up means off. A stacked freezer holds it up all the time.
- Find the shut-off valve and confirm it is fully open — A part-open valve gives small or hollow cubes, not no cubes.
- Look into the fill tube at the back of the freezer with a torch — A plug of clear ice there explains the whole fault.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the freezer door switch wired as you found it: it cuts the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a spinning blade behind an open door.
When to call a technician
Call once the temperature is confirmed good, the supply is proven open and nothing is frozen in the fill path — what is left is an electrical part in a wet place, which is a meter job. Call sooner if the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature — then ice is the symptom, not the fault. Call immediately if you find water standing on or near an electrical connection.
