The short answer
A noisy apartment-size refrigerator is usually telling you one thing: the cabinet is touching the surrounding cabinetry. Next on the list: the cabinet is rocking on an uneven floor. Almost everything here is housekeeping rather than a failing compressor; the one service job sits at the bottom and sounds quite different.
What you observe
- A new sound the cabinet did not make when it was installed — What matters is whether it tracks the compressor, a fan, or your hand.
- The noise is louder in the next room than in the kitchen — Structure-borne noise travels better than airborne noise.
- A knock or thump at the moment the machine starts up — The start torque twists the cabinet, and a loose foot lands.
- A ticking or scraping that stops when you open the door — The door switch cuts this fan, so the door tells you which fan it is.
- NEAR MISS — a gurgle or a soft crackle after the compressor stops — Refrigerant settling in the liner. Normal, and no page can fix it.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The cabinet is touching the surrounding cabinetry — First on a flush-installed machine, because a tight apartment alcove with little air gap leaves almost no gap on any side.
- The cabinet is rocking on an uneven floor — Ranked here because it is free to correct and it accounts for a large share of the noise complaints on a light cabinet.
- The evaporator fan is striking ice or running dry — Ranked here because a fan hitting ice is both a noise and an early warning that the defrost system is slipping.
- The condenser fan is fouled or its bearing has dried out — Last of the fan causes — it matters less on this cabinet than the causes above, but it is easy to check while the coil is exposed.
Check in this order, and why
- Slide a card down each side between cabinet and carcass — Where the card will not pass, the cabinet is touching.
- Push the top corners and feel for rock — A cabinet that moves under a hand knocks every time the compressor starts.
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen at the rear panel — A tick or scrape that stops with the door is inside the freezer.
- Isolate the cabinet and spin the condenser fan by hand — A gritty or stiff blade is a bearing; a loose one is a mount.
What an owner can safely check
- Work out whether the noise tracks the compressor, a fan, or your hand — Three sources, three fixes, and nothing else helps until you know which.

- Slide a thin card down each side and along the top — Any point it will not pass is a contact to shim clear.

- STOP HERE if the noise survives every check above — A bearing or a compressor mount means the assembly comes out. That is a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the freezer door switch wired as you found it: it cuts the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a spinning blade behind an open door.
When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet is level, the panels are secure and nothing loose is touching it, and a whirr, squeal or rumble is still there. That means a bearing or a mounting, and both mean the assembly comes out. Call urgently if the noise arrived with poor cooling — that is not a noise complaint at all. Call immediately if you smell burning or hear a scraping metal-on-metal sound.
