The short answer
On an apartment-size refrigerator, a cabinet that runs and still will not hold temperature points first at one thing: too little air gap around the cabinet. Next on the list: the automatic defrost cycle has stalled. The checks that matter most need no tools; the sealed system is the only part that is not owner work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the machine is clearly running — Work is going in and no cold is coming out.
- The recess itself feels warm to stand beside — Trapped exhaust warms the cabinetry around the machine.
- A solid sheet of ice on the freezer back wall — Normal frost is a dusting; a glazed sheet means the heater is not running.
- The machine compartment runs hot and noisy — A coil that cannot shed heat makes the fan and compressor work harder.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start-relay fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- Too little air gap around the cabinet — First because a tight apartment alcove with little air gap is exactly the install that traps heat. A freestanding cabinet pushed into a snug recess recirculates its own warm exhaust, so the condenser is shedding heat into air it has already heated.
- The automatic defrost cycle has stalled — Ranked here because a stalled defrost gives exactly the same warm-but-running symptom as the causes above and has to be told apart from them.
- Condenser coil blanketed with dust — Ranked here, and it is the cause that most often turns out to be the whole story once the obvious things are clear.
- The door gasket is no longer sealing — Last of the owner-checkable causes, and the one people skip because the door still looks shut.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the gap at the back and the sides by hand — If the exhaust has nowhere to go, nothing downstream will help.
- Check the freezer rear panel for a sheet of ice — A sheet rather than a dusting means defrost, not airflow.
- Find and inspect the condenser coil — A grey felt across the fins is the commonest cause of poor cooling anywhere.
- Run the paper test around all four sides of the door — A sheet that slides out freely anywhere is a leak you can feel.

- Note what the cabinet is actually doing before touching anything — Running or silent, one compartment or both, since when.

- Pull the cabinet forward a hand’s width for a day — If it recovers overnight, the recess was the whole fault.

- Empty the freezer and leave both doors open overnight — Cold that returns after a full thaw confirms the defrost system.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the freezer door switch wired as you found it: it cuts the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a spinning blade behind an open door.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and door checks above are clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining causes are behind a panel or inside the sealed system. Call sooner if the compressor runs without a break: a cabinet that never reaches temperature works far harder than a healthy one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil anywhere near the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
