The finding, first
On this family the usual finding behind a warm cabinet is a defrost cycle that has stalled rather than a sealed system that has failed. Ice sheets across the evaporator, the fan can no longer push air through it, and the compartment climbs even though the compressor never stops. Most of what follows is owner work. The one item that is not is also the least likely, which is why it sits at the bottom of the list. One entry in the table finishes in a wildcard, which stands for a run of trim codes that behave alike here.
What you actually see
- The outside of the cabinet, near the hinges, is unusually warm — Some of these cabinets run condenser tubing through the shell. Warm there is normal; hot enough to be uncomfortable is not.
- The cabinet recovers overnight and fails again by evening — A marginal system keeping up while the kitchen is cool and losing ground once it warms. It points at heat rejection rather than at the air path.
- The compressor never cycles off — It runs without ever reaching the set point, which is the same fault seen from the control side rather than the air side.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is cold but the icemaker is empty — Cold air with no ice is its own fault path and has its own page for this family.
Causes, most likely first on this roster
- Airflow blocked by a frosted evaporator — First on this roster, and by some distance. Adaptive defrost on these cabinets stalls before it fails outright, so ice accumulates over weeks and the owner notices the warmth long before the frost.
- Defrost heater, thermostat or timer fault — This is what turns cyclical frost into permanent frost. It is also the point at which looking stops being enough and a meter is needed.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Bottom of the list, which is the whole reason for working in this order. It is the rarest finding here and the only one with no owner-level version.
Work in this sequence
- Listen at the freezer with the door open and the switch held in — The evaporator fan should run. Hearing it separates the two likeliest causes before any panel comes off.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — If the fan runs and the panel is iced, the airflow cause is confirmed and the defrost side is where the fault lives.
- Check that the vents between the compartments are not blocked by food — A packed freezer will starve the fresh-food side on its own, and it costs nothing to rule out.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the condenser coil — Dust and pet hair pack into a bottom-mounted coil until it cannot shed heat. This is the one step that is both common and invisible from the front.
- Feel the condenser tubing and the compressor shell — Only worth doing once the steps above are clean, and only as an indication of whether the sealed system is working at all.
- Empty the cabinet and run it with the doors shut overnight — Removes the load and the door openings as variables. What it does overnight tells you what kind of fault this is.

Kill the supply before anything else happens: unplug it, or switch the breaker off. A capacitor can hold a charge long after the power has gone.
