The short answer
An Artt washer that trips a protective device, smells hot or gives any tingle from the cabinet should be isolated at the breaker and left off. The commonest cause is a heating element that has failed to earth, and the second is moisture reaching wiring inside an ageing cabinet. Neither improves with use, and both are measured rather than guessed at.
What owners describe
- A trip that happens when heating starts — An element leaking to earth, and close to diagnostic.
- A trip on the first cold morning after a mild spell — Condensation finding degraded insulation, which is the ageing pattern.
- A hot or acrid smell during a cycle — Overheating insulation, a connector or the motor.
- A tingle from the cabinet, taps or pipework — Stop using the machine now: that is current on metalwork.
- A warm plug or discoloured socket — A degrading connection, and part of the fault is in the house.
Causes, most likely first
- Heating element failed to earth — First, because it sits in water and it is the most exposed component.
- Moisture reaching wiring or connectors — Second, and the reason these faults look seasonal on an older machine.
- Motor or capacitor degradation — Third, and it tends to show at spin rather than at heat.
- Plug and socket wear — Fourth, and the machine is only half the fault.
- A household circuit or earthing fault — Last, and it is what remains when the machine is unplugged and the device still trips.
Work down this list
- Switch off at the breaker and leave it off — An action, not a check.
- Note the exact point in the cycle where it tripped — The most useful single piece of information for whoever attends.
- Reset once with the machine unplugged — It separates a house fault from an appliance fault.
- Stop — Insulation resistance is measured with an instrument on an isolated machine.
What an owner can safely do
- Isolate at the breaker and unplug the machine — Do not run another load to see whether it repeats: it will, and worse.
About 5 min
- Write down when in the cycle the trip happened — Fill, heat, wash or spin. Each points at a different component.
About 5 min
- Reset the protective device once, machine unplugged — A second trip with nothing connected means the circuit itself is faulty.

- Look at the plug, flex and socket for heat damage — Discolouration means an electrician replaces both. Stop here.

Power off, panels later
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a washer's motor capacitor holds enough to hurt in a wet room. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A. If anybody has felt a shock or tingle from the cabinet or from nearby plumbing, treat the machine as live and have an electrician verify the earthing of the circuit before it is used again — that symptom is about the house as much as the appliance.
Where the owner fix ends
Call as soon as the machine trips more than once, and keep it isolated meanwhile. Call an electrician first when the device trips with the washer unplugged, when the socket shows heat damage, or when anybody has felt a tingle: those are circuit and earthing questions. Tell whoever attends exactly where in the cycle the trip occurs and whether the weather changed, because both narrow the diagnosis before they arrive.

Scope of this page
This page covers the Artt washer class and stops where measurement begins. It publishes no element ratings, no insulation-resistance figures and no wiring colours, because those differ between builds under this badge and because publishing them encourages exactly the unsafe testing this page exists to prevent. Household wiring, earthing and protective devices belong to a licensed electrician rather than to an appliance technician.
