The short answer
The fault that defines this brand is a freezer that thaws in cold weather. A simple thermostat senses the cabinet, and in an unheated space that stays cold on its own the thermostat stops calling for cooling — so the compressor never runs and the contents slowly warm above freezing. Nothing is broken, and no part will fix it. Manual defrost neglect and lid sealing follow.
The problems that actually happen, by what you observe
- Freezer contents soften during cold weather — The signature unheated-space fault. The cabinet is not running because the room is doing its job for it.
- Thick ice on the walls of a chest cabinet — Manual defrost that has not been done. It steals capacity long before it stops cooling.
- Lid or door not sitting flat — Ice under the seal, or a hinge that has been strained by an overfilled basket.
- Water on the floor after warm days — Ice melting faster than the drain plug arrangement can handle.
- Runs constantly in summer heat — An uninsulated outbuilding in high heat is a harder job than a kitchen, not a fault.
- Buzzing or humming through a concrete floor — Hard surfaces transmit compressor noise. Usually fixed by levelling or a mat.
Problem classes in frequency order on this brand
- Unheated-space operation — First, and specific to where these cabinets live. A cabinet in a cold garage stops calling for cooling because its own sensor is already satisfied, so the freezer drifts up towards the room temperature rather than staying frozen. It is the single most reported and most misunderstood fault on the brand.
- Manual defrost neglect — Second. Ice accumulates steadily on a manual-defrost cabinet, insulating the walls that are supposed to absorb heat and eating usable space. Owners chip at it, which risks puncturing tubing that cannot be repaired.
- Lid or door sealing — Third. A chest lid seals by weight and a compact door by gasket, and ice under either surface holds it open a fraction. That accelerates the icing that caused it in the first place.
- Ambient heat and clearance — Fourth. The same cabinet that under-runs in winter over-runs in summer if it is in an uninsulated space with no clearance around the condenser.
- Thermostat and sealed-system faults — Last. A stuck thermostat gives permanent running or permanent off, which is genuinely a fault — but it is diagnosed only after the room temperature question has been answered.
Which of these an owner can fix
Moving the cabinet somewhere temperature-stable, or accepting that an unheated space limits what it can do, is the fix for the leading fault. Defrosting properly rather than chipping, cleaning the seal, levelling the cabinet and giving the condenser clearance handle the rest. Call a technician when a cabinet in a normal room will not cool with a clean condenser and a sealing lid, and immediately for a compressor that hums and trips or any oil trace at the compressor.
