The short answer
Every fridge makes water during defrost, and there is exactly one path it is supposed to take: down the drain at the back of the compartment, through a tube, into a tray above the compressor where it evaporates. When water appears anywhere else, that path is blocked or the cabinet is tipped the wrong way. Start at the drain hole.
What you observe
- Water pooling under the bottom drawer or shelf — The classic blocked-drain signature: it collects at the lowest point inside.
- Water running out when you open the door — Enough has collected inside to spill over the threshold.
- A sheet of ice on the compartment floor — The blocked drain has frozen; the water freezes where it stands.
- Water on the floor at the back only — An overflowing or dislodged evaporation tray, or a split drain tube.
- NEAR MISS — condensation on the outside of the cabinet — Surface condensation in a humid room is not a leak and needs no repair.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Blocked or frozen defrost drain — First, and by a wide margin. Food debris and residue collect in the small drain hole at the back of the compartment; once it blocks, defrost water has nowhere to go and pools inside, then freezes. Clearing the hole cures the leak and the ice at the same time.
- The cabinet tipped forward or unlevel — Second. The floor of the compartment relies on gravity to reach the drain, and a cabinet leaning the wrong way sends the water to the door instead.
- A door that lets warm, moist air in — Third. A leaking seal condenses far more water than the drain was designed to carry, so the same drain that coped for years starts to overflow.
- Evaporation tray or drain tube displaced — Last. A tray knocked out of position during a move, or a tube pushed off its spigot, puts water straight onto the floor behind the cabinet.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish where the water actually is — Inside, at the door, or behind — each points at a different part of the path.
- Find and clear the drain hole at the back of the compartment — Second, because a blocked drain is the leading cause of water inside.
- Check the cabinet is level, ideally tipped very slightly back — Next: geometry decides where the water runs.
- Look behind for a displaced tray or a split tube — Last, and it explains water that only ever appears on the floor.

- Empty the cabinet, dry it, and watch where water returns — The first place it reappears is the most useful clue you have.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before reaching behind the cabinet or removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and you are working near water. Mop up water on the floor before moving the cabinet. Never clear a drain with a metal probe or use a heat gun on ice; the tubing and the liner behind are thin and easily punctured.
When to call a technician
Call when water returns after the drain is clear, the cabinet is level and the tray and tube are confirmed in place. Call when the drain re-blocks or refreezes within days, which usually means a seal is admitting far more moisture than the path can carry, or a defrost fault is at work. Call promptly for any water reaching the electrical compartment, and isolate the cabinet while you wait.
