The short answer
Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull it out. If it slides free with no drag, the seal is not gripping at that point — repeat it right round the door and you have mapped the leak in a few minutes. On a compact cabinet the commonest cause is a gasket distorted by transit or storage, and warming it or reseating it often restores the grip.
What you observe
- Paper slides out freely at one or more points — The conclusive test. Where the paper is loose, warm air is getting in.
- Condensation or frost concentrated near one edge — Moist air entering at a specific place and freezing where it meets the cold.
- The gasket is flattened, folded or shiny in a strip — Distortion from transit, storage or a door left shut on a packed cabinet.
- The door has to be pushed to latch — Alignment rather than the gasket — the door is no longer square to the cabinet.

Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Gasket distorted in transit or storage — First on a compact cabinet, because these arrive boxed and are often stored or moved between rooms. A gasket that has been compressed flat in one place keeps that shape, and the leak appears exactly there.
- A hard, dried gasket that no longer springs back — Second. Over time the material stiffens, loses its grip on the cabinet face and leaves a gap that the paper test finds instantly.
- The cabinet or the door out of square — Third. An unlevel cabinet, or a door reversed without realigning it, holds the gasket off the frame along a whole edge no matter what condition it is in.
- Sticky residue and contents fouling the seal — Last, and the easiest to fix: spills glue the gasket to the frame and tear it, and over-packed shelves hold the door open a fraction.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the paper test right round the door — First, because it identifies whether there is a leak and exactly where.
- Clean the gasket and the cabinet face it meets — Second: residue causes as many failures as wear does.
- Check the cabinet is level and the door closes square — An out-of-square door defeats a perfect gasket.
- Look for flattened or folded sections and warm them gently — Distorted material often recovers; hard, cracked material does not.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or hinge cover — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never apply a heat gun or a naked flame to a gasket: it deforms permanently and the material can melt. Support the door before loosening any hinge; a compact door is heavier than it looks and can drop.
When to call a technician
Call when the paper test still fails after cleaning, levelling and reseating, which means the gasket needs replacing. Call when the gasket is split, torn or has pulled out of its channel, or when the door will not sit square because a hinge is worn. Call promptly if the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature — on a compact cabinet, weigh a gasket and hinge repair against replacement first.
