Noise on the QZW line separates cleanly into sounds that follow the fan, sounds that follow the compressor and sounds that follow the cabinet. A noise that is getting worse month by month is a different problem from one that appeared overnight, and that split does most of the diagnosis.
What you observe
- A rattle that comes and goes within a run — It appears for a few seconds at a particular point and then clears on its own.
- A continuous whine while air is moving — It tracks the fan rather than the compressor and stops when the fan does.
- A buzz that you can feel through the case — Felt as much as heard, and it changes if you rest a hand on a panel.
- NEAR MISS - clicking every few minutes with no run — That is a start attempt failing rather than a mechanical noise, and it points at the supply or the start circuit.
Ranked causes for these models
- A worn fan bearing — The leading cause on these models: it develops rather than appearing, gets worse in the cold, and is often quieter for a while after a run, which is how it is distinguished from a foul.
- Compressor mounts that have perished — Second: this is a genuine machine fault and the point at which the owner checks run out: confirming it means getting into the machinery bay with the unit isolated.
- The cabinet not standing squarely — Third, and worth excluding before going further: a compact cabinet weighs little relative to the thump its compressor makes, so a corner that is not carrying weight lets the whole case rock at every start and stop. What the owner hears is a knock, and what is actually happening is the cabinet moving against the surface it stands on.
- A failing compressor — Last: it is the least likely of the four and the most expensive to be wrong about: the pattern that points here is a rising noise over weeks together with longer running and a cabinet that is slowly losing ground.
What to check first, second, third
- Judge whether the noise is continuous or rhythmic — Note whether the noise is present at every start or only after a long run; a bearing that quietens as it warms is a bearing on its way out.
- Only after the free checks, consider the mounts — With stance, contents, panels and surface all excluded, a knock that remains at every start points into the machinery bay. That is the point to stop.
- Press each corner in turn — Slide the unit a hand-width and listen again. A noise that changes with position is the stance or the surface, never the compressor.
Read this before you start
Safety
Switch off at the breaker or pull the plug before any panel is disturbed, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat a door switch to keep a fan running while you listen; there are safer ways to place a noise.

When to call a technician
Stop and call if the unit is also losing temperature, if a breaker trips, or if the noise remains with the cabinet empty, level, clear of the wall and with every panel pressed. At that point the cheap explanations are gone.
