What this usually is on these models
On QZW units the ice complaint means different things depending on whether the unit makes ice automatically. Work through everything that can be changed from outside the cabinet first, since all of it produces the same empty bin, so the first step below establishes which question is being asked. Start with door traffic and warm loads and leave the ice maker mechanism itself until everything cheaper has been excluded.
What you observe
- Cubes that are hollow, small or misshapen — Ice forms but never completes, which points at temperature or at water rather than at the mechanism.
- A solid slab instead of separate cubes — Ice that partly melted and refroze, bonded into one block that then stops production.
- Production stopped abruptly and completely — It was normal one day and nothing the next, with no change in cooling.
- Production tailed off over weeks — Fewer cubes, then none, alongside a compartment that is not quite as cold as it was.
- NEAR MISS - everything freezes solid — Over-freezing is the opposite complaint and runs the diagnosis the other way, starting at the setting and the control.
Ranked causes for these models
- Door traffic and warm loads — The leading cause on these models: every opening replaces cold dry air with warm wet air, and each warm load restarts the pull-down. Ice is the first thing to suffer because it is made at the lowest temperature in the cabinet.
- A mode or setpoint that is not what the owner assumes — Second: this is the cause with the highest ratio of wasted service calls to real faults, which is why it is ranked rather than mentioned in passing.
- The cabinet packed so that cold cannot circulate — Third, and worth excluding before going further: contents pressed against the cold surfaces and filling the air paths stop cold air reaching the place ice is made. The compartment shows a reasonable average temperature while the coldest point it needs is nowhere near cold enough.
- The ice maker mechanism itself — It ranks below the free checks because every one of them produces the same complaint for nothing.
What to check first, second, third
- Give it an undisturbed run — Count the openings on a typical day. On a compact cabinet the number is usually the explanation.
- Read the mode and the setpoint back as they actually are — Read the setting as it is now rather than as it was meant to be, set the coldest available setting, and give it several hours undisturbed.
- Unload and leave the air paths clear — Look for frost marks on the plate where contents were pressed against it.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker or pull the plug before you reach into the compartment mechanism, since a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not run a lead across a wet floor while defrosting, and keep meltwater away from the machinery end.

When to call a technician
Stop and call once the free checks are exhausted - setting, load, clearance, room, frost, bin and supply - and the bin is still empty after a full undisturbed day. Nothing beyond that point is reachable without panels.
