Start here
A QX unit that has become noisy is, more often than not, telling you about the room it is in. Start with everything that costs nothing to test and can be undone in a minute, so the ranking here puts position and load above machinery. The first check on this line is the simplest one - press each corner in turn - and the cause at the bottom of the list is the only one that is not owner work.
The observables
- Gurgling or trickling after the compressor stops — Liquid settling in the pipework; this is an ordinary sound and not a fault on its own.
- Ticking in time with something turning — A hard, even tick with a fixed interval, which is the signature of a blade brushing something.
- The noise is far worse in one room than another — The same unit, the same load, a different surface and a different amount of background sound.
- NEAR MISS - a hum with a burning smell — Isolate it and stop. A hot electrical smell is not something to diagnose by ear.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- The cabinet not standing squarely — First here, and by a wide margin: the unit is light enough to be moved by its own machinery. Standing on three of its four feet, or on a surface that flexes, turns an ordinary start into a bang that carries through the room.
- The cabinet touching a wall or furniture — Second on this line: a case pressed against a wall, a cupboard or another appliance transmits vibration directly into it, and the second object rattles at its own frequency. That rattle is what gets reported, not the compressor.
- Contents and baskets vibrating — It deserves a place in the ranking rather than a footnote: it is the single commonest explanation for a new noise in a unit that has not changed otherwise.
- A worn fan bearing — Last on the list, and the only one here that is not owner work: it develops rather than appearing, gets worse in the cold, and is often quieter for a while after a run, which is how it is distinguished from a foul.
The order to work in
- Press each corner in turn — Press down on each corner of the top. Any corner that moves is the one making the noise, and packing it out is the whole repair.
- Pull the unit clear of everything it touches — Check the rear and the sides for a lead, a hose or a bracket resting against the case.
- Run the unit empty for a minute — Take everything out, close the door and listen. If the noise has gone, it was load, not machinery, and the fix is how the cabinet is packed.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the machinery bay contains both the electrics and sealed pipework that should not be levered or bent.
