Whirlpool Refrigerator Rust & Corrosion — Causes

Rust on a Whirlpool refrigerator is usually cosmetic, but a couple of spots are worth taking seriously. The drain pan underneath also sits warm and moist and eventually rusts, and a rusted-through pan leaks water onto the floor, so inspect it yearly and replace it at the first sign of rust-through.

Interior Shelving#

Wire shelf brackets, supports, and crisper rails rust where their coating wears from repeated contact — this is cosmetic and easy to handle. Sand, prime, and paint the exposed wire, or replace the shelving component, which is widely available for Whirlpool models. Rust flaking from an overhead shelf onto food, though, should be fixed promptly.

Prevent It#

• Clean the exterior with recommended products and keep bleach and harsh chemicals off stainless.
