Dollar-bill test. Shut the door on a bill and pull it out with a steady tug. It should drag with real friction; if it slides free, the seal is open at that spot. Check at least eight points — top, bottom, both sides, and all four corners. Corners fail first.
Look it over. Cracks or tears mean replace. A section pressed permanently flat has lost its spring. Mold in the folds signals moisture creeping past a weak spot nearby. A gasket peeling away from the door means the retaining spline has popped out of its channel.
Condensation check. Run a finger along the outside edge of the closed door. Beads of moisture there mean warm air is reaching the cold surface through a gap.

Clean It First#
A lot of "bad" gaskets are just dirty. Food film and mildew stop the magnetic strip from grabbing the frame. Wipe the gasket and every fold with warm water and a spoonful of baking soda, clean the metal frame it seals against, dry it, and retest with the bill. Many seals pass after a good cleaning.

Installing the New Gasket#
- Warm it first. Soak the new gasket in warm water or lay it in the sun for about 30 minutes — a cold, stiff gasket from the box will not seat and gaps at the corners. Skipping this is the number-one install mistake.
- Starting at the door’s top center, pull the old gasket out of its channel; on most models it peels free without tools.
- Work around the perimeter and remove it, then wipe the channel clean.
- Press the new spline into the channel at the top center, then work outward to both sides, pressing firmly every few inches.
- Bear down extra hard at the corners, where gaps form.
- Finish at the bottom center, close the door, and check the whole perimeter.
- If the rubber bunches, warm it with a hair dryer on low and reshape it.
Do not stretch the gasket as you install it — pulling it tight thins the seal and it will pull back and gap.

A door that has sagged on its hinges compresses the gasket unevenly, and no amount of new rubber fixes a frame that no longer meets the cabinet squarely. Check the hinge screws and overall door alignment before assuming a second gasket will do better. Lingering condensation after a good seal can also point to a blocked defrost drain rather than the gasket, so clear that drain and confirm the door closes flush before buying another seal.
