Whirlpool Dryer Blower Fan Replacement — Airflow Diagnosis, Wheel Removal & Motor Swap
The blower fan in a Whirlpool dryer pulls heated air through the drum and pushes it out through the exhaust vent. It sits at the rear of the dryer, mounted on the motor shaft opposite the drum belt pulley. When the blower fails, the dryer runs and heats but clothes take forever to dry because moist air cannot escape the drum.
The blower assembly has two components: the blower wheel (a plastic or metal fan with curved blades) and the motor that drives it. On most Whirlpool dryers, the blower wheel shares the motor shaft with the drum — the motor does double duty spinning both the drum (via belt) and the blower (directly on the shaft). This means a motor failure kills both tumbling and airflow simultaneously, while a blower wheel failure only kills airflow.
Is It the Blower or a Clogged Vent?
Before replacing the blower, rule out the much more common exhaust restriction:
- Pull the dryer out and disconnect the exhaust duct from the back. Run a timed dry with the duct disconnected. If drying improves dramatically, the problem is in the duct run, not the blower.
- Check the lint screen housing. Remove the lint screen and look down the slot with a flashlight. Lint buildup inside the housing restricts airflow even when the screen itself is clean. A lint brush kit ($10) clears this.
- Feel the exhaust output with your hand while the dryer runs. Strong airflow = blower is fine, restriction is downstream. Weak or no airflow = blower wheel is damaged or obstructed.

Symptoms of Blower Failure
- Dryer takes 2-3 cycles to dry a load — airflow is reduced but not zero. Often a cracked blower wheel with missing blade sections.
- Thumping or rattling from the rear — a broken blade on the blower wheel creates an imbalance. Distinct from drum roller noise (which comes from underneath).
- No airflow from the exhaust vent outside — blower wheel is completely broken or has come loose from the motor shaft.
- Burning smell during operation — without adequate airflow, the heating element overheats the surrounding components. The thermal fuse usually trips before damage occurs, but the smell is a warning.

Replacing the Blower Wheel
Tools needed: 5/16-inch nut driver, Phillips #2, putty knife (for spring clips), clamp or blower wheel removal tool
- Unplug the dryer — 240V, always disconnect fully
- Remove the back panel (typically 6-8 screws)
- Locate the blower housing at the lower rear — it connects to the exhaust duct
- The blower wheel is inside this housing, mounted on the motor shaft with a clamp or pressed on with friction
- Remove the clamp holding the wheel to the shaft (some models use a reverse-thread nut — turns clockwise to loosen)
- Pull the wheel off the shaft — it may require a blower wheel puller tool ($15) if it is pressed on tightly
- Inspect the motor shaft for scoring or damage
- Press or clamp the new wheel onto the shaft, ensuring it seats fully against the motor bearing housing
- Spin the wheel by hand to verify free rotation with no rubbing against the housing
- Reassemble the back panel and reconnect the exhaust duct
- Run a test cycle and check for proper exhaust airflow at the exterior vent
When the Motor Needs Replacement
If the motor shaft is scored, the motor bearings are noisy (grinding sound even after replacing the wheel), or the motor does not spin at all, the entire motor needs replacement. This is a bigger job:
- The drum belt must be removed to free the motor
- The motor pulley and blower wheel both mount to the motor shaft
- Motor replacement takes 45-90 minutes DIY

Common Mistakes
- Not cleaning the lint from the blower housing — even with a new wheel, packed lint in the housing restricts airflow. Clean the housing thoroughly while it is open
- Not checking the exhaust duct first — a new blower wheel will not overcome a clogged 25-foot duct run full of lint. Clean the duct before replacing parts
- Forcing the blower wheel off the shaft — the shaft is hardened steel but can be scored by pliers or hammering. Use the proper puller tool
Lifespan
Blower wheels last 10-15 years. The plastic wheels on newer models are lighter and quieter but more prone to cracking from heat fatigue than the metal wheels on older units. The motor lasts 12-20 years. Regular lint screen cleaning and annual exhaust duct cleaning are the best preventive measures — a restricted duct makes the motor work harder and the wheel spin under back-pressure, accelerating wear on both.

FAQ
My dryer heats but takes forever to dry — is it the blower?
Check the exhaust duct first — it is clogged in 80% of slow-drying cases. If the duct is clean and airflow at the exterior vent is weak, the blower wheel is likely cracked or broken.
Can I run my dryer with a broken blower wheel?
Technically the drum will still spin, but without airflow the heating element will overheat and trip the thermal fuse. Running without the blower also creates a fire risk from lint not being expelled.
Is the blower wheel the same as the drum roller?
No. The blower wheel is a fan that moves air, mounted at the rear on the motor shaft. Drum rollers are support wheels that the drum rides on. Different parts, different locations, different symptoms (blower = no airflow, rollers = thumping noise).
