Start from the event, not the sound
If a Whirlpool dishwasher became noisy on a day you can name, look at what changed. The commonest answer is that the machine itself is new - an older design that grinds food waste sounds nothing like a newer one with a filter, and an owner moving between them hears a fault that is not there. After that come plumbing work, which brings water hammer at fill; a change in loading, which stops the spray arms turning; and something broken in the tub.

Before you reach into the tub
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before reaching into the sump. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The water in a tub can still be hot at the end of a cycle. Broken glass in the sump is common; use gloves and a torch, not bare fingers. Do not keep running a machine that is grinding on something hard.
When this becomes a service call
A grind or rattle continues with the sump confirmed clear. The noise is constant at every stage of the cycle. A knock at fill continues after the supply has been checked. No event explains the timing - then work from the sound page instead.
