The answer first
Water from a freezer is always its own frost, arriving somewhere it should not. The ranking here starts with lid or door seal letting humid air in.
What you observe
- Water pooling in the bottom of the cabinet — A blocked defrost drain, or frost that has thawed and not drained.
- A puddle on the floor at the front — Water has run forward from the cabinet floor or the drain.
- Water running down the outside of the cabinet — Condensation on the shell rather than a leak at all.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also warm — Treat the temperature first: the water is a consequence of the thaw, not the fault.
Causes, most likely first on a Smad freezer
- Lid or door seal letting humid air in — This is the cause behind almost every case of water on the outside of a cabinet. Ranked first on a Smad freezer: it is free to check with a sheet of paper and it gets worse every hour it is left.
- A humid room, or a cabinet opened often — In a damp garage or basement, condensation forms on the outside of the cabinet with nothing wrong at all.
- Defrost drain blocked — Once blocked, the water backs up over the cabinet floor and runs forward when the door opens.
- Cabinet out of level, so the drain does not fall — The defrost drain has no pump behind it: a cabinet tipped the wrong way holds the water instead of shedding it.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper and pull it out, right round — On a chest cabinet check the hinge end first.
- Note whether the water is on the outside of the cabinet or inside it — Wipe it dry and see how quickly it returns.
- Look for ice or water on the cabinet floor at the back — Water pooling there is the drain, not the shell.
What an owner can safely check
- Test the seal with paper all the way round, then clean the gasket or lid seat and check the lid sits flat — A seal that is clean and still springy stops the condensation at source.

- Wipe the cabinet dry, improve the ventilation in the room, and keep openings short — Condensation on the shell is a room problem. A dehumidifier settles it where the room cannot be ventilated.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the freezer off at the plug or the breaker before removing a panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never put a sharp tool or a heat gun to an iced evaporator — thin, pressurised tubing, and a hole in it is the end of the machine. Support the lid while you work, and empty the cabinet into coolers before moving it.
When to call a technician
Call when the drain is clear, the seal is good, the cabinet is level and the water still returns, because what is left is the drain tube inside the insulation or the pan under the compressor. Dry the floor in the meantime: water beside a powered appliance is worth taking seriously. If your unit is an absorption model running on gas, the gas side is not owner work: a licensed gas technician handles the burner, the flue and any smell of gas.
