In short
A leaking washer loses water at the door, at a hose connection, or at the pump, and those three are found in completely different ways. On this machine the first suspect is door seal torn, folded or holding something.
What you observe
- Water at the front of the machine, below the door — The door seal, or an item caught in it.
- Water only during fill — A tap connection or a fill hose rather than anything inside the machine.
- Water only during drain or spin — The drain hose connection or the pump housing.
- NEAR MISS — the leak is at the tap itself — That is plumbing rather than appliance, and the tap is where to start.
Causes, most likely first on a Smad washer
- Door seal torn, folded or holding something — The bellows seal on a front loader tears at the bottom, where the load rubs and the coins collect. Ranked first on a Smad washer: the seal is rubbed by every load, so it wears out ahead of anything else in the water path.
- Fill or drain hose connection — Hose washers harden and tap connections work loose, and both weep rather than burst.
- Filter cap not seated, or its seal perished — Its O-ring hardens over years and stops sealing even when the cap is tight.
- Machine not level, so it walks and stresses its connections — It also throws water at the door seal instead of down the drum.
Check in this order, and why
- Run a hand right round the inside of the seal — A tear, a fold or an item caught in it is found by touch before it is seen.
- Dry every connection behind the machine, then run a cycle and look again — Note which phase produces it: fill points at the taps, drain at the waste hose.
- Check the filter cap is fully home and its seal is soft — A cap that is not fully home leaks slowly at floor level.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the door seal back all the way round, clear out coins and debris, and check the lower section for tears — Dry it afterwards. A seal that is clean and intact leaks only if something is caught across it.

- Shut both taps, dry the tap and hose connections completely, then run a short cycle and inspect with a torch — Renew any hardened rubber washer while the taps are off — they are pennies and they are the usual cause.

- STOP HERE if the next step needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the wall and close the taps before opening anything. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the filter will hand you several litres of water if you are not ready for it. Never bypass a lid switch or a door interlock, never force a locked door on a full drum, and never move a loaded or flooded machine — drain it first.
When to call a technician
Owner work here is the seal, the filter cap, the detergent, the levelling and the hose connections you can reach. The tub seal, the sump hose and the pump housing are inside the machine. Leave the taps shut until it is fixed. If your unit is an absorption model running on gas, the gas side is not owner work: a licensed gas technician handles the burner, the flue and any smell of gas.
