In short
A warm freezer is a delivery problem far more often than a production one. The ranking here starts with the room, the load or the clearance around the cabinet, and the sealed system ranks last because it fails least.
What you observe
- Ice cream is soft and packets feel pliable — The cabinet is above freezing point but not obviously warm.
- A heavy build-up of frost on the walls or the lid — Warm humid air is getting in, and the frost is the evidence.
- Frost has formed over the air vents at the back — An upright that can no longer circulate its own air.
- NEAR MISS — it freezes fine but water appears on the floor — That is a drain or a condensation problem, and the water-leak page ranks it.
Causes, most likely first on a Smad freezer
- The room, the load or the clearance around the cabinet — Garages, porches and sheds swing far outside the range a freezer was designed for, in both directions. Ranked first on a Smad freezer: the rated performance assumes a room and a clearance, and a garage guarantees neither.
- Socket, breaker or an extension lead — Freezers in garages are routinely on extension leads and shared sockets, and either interrupts a compressor.
- Lid or door seal not sealing — A chest lid that no longer sits flat, or an upright gasket that has hardened, lets warm humid air in all day.
- Frost build-up choking the airflow — On a manual-defrost cabinet, frost is insulation: past a certain thickness the walls stop taking heat out of the air.
Check in this order, and why
- Note how warm or cold the room gets, and check the clearance around the cabinet — A nearly empty freezer loses its cold every time it is opened.
- Check the socket, the breaker and any extension lead — An extension lead is worth eliminating before anything else.
- Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper and pull it out, right round — On a chest freezer check the hinge end: that is where the lid lifts first.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall, and fill empty space with bottles of water or crumpled newspaper — A full freezer holds its temperature through door openings and power cuts far better than an empty one.
Tools: water bottlesAbout 20 min
- Plug the freezer straight into a wall socket of its own, with no extension lead and nothing sharing it — A standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and a freezer should not share one with power tools.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is down. Do not chip or pry at frost: on a chest freezer the tubing is moulded into the wall and a puncture releases the refrigerant. Warm air and patience are the only safe tools. Empty the cabinet into coolers before you move it, and mind a heavy lid.
When to call a technician
Owner work is the seal, the defrosting, the coil, the clearance and the setting. Everything else is licensed refrigerant work or behind a fixed panel. Call at once if you smell burning or see oil around the compressor. If your unit is an absorption model running on gas, the gas side is not owner work: a licensed gas technician handles the burner, the flue and any smell of gas.

What this page does not cover
This is the generalised Smad freezer page. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked above and is the more precise answer for your unit. Left out on purpose: part numbers, connector colours, the order panels come off in, and every torque figure — a generalised page cannot be right about any of them.
