Why Is My Refrigerator Making Noise? Every Sound Decoded

Your refrigerator runs 24/7, so some noise is completely normal. But how do you know which sounds are fine and which signal a problem? This guide decodes every common refrigerator noise — from normal operating sounds to warning signs that need professional attention.

Normal Refrigerator Sounds (No Worry)

Humming

A steady, low hum is the sound of the compressor running. This is completely normal and typically lasts 15-30 minutes followed by a quiet period. Digital inverter compressors (common in Samsung and LG) produce a more constant but quieter hum since they vary speed rather than cycling on and off.

Clicking or Tapping

Brief clicks when the compressor turns on or off are normal. The defrost timer also produces occasional clicks (every 8-12 hours). Thermostat cycling creates a soft click-click sound.

Gurgling or Sloshing

This is refrigerant flowing through the sealed system — completely normal. You'll hear it most after the compressor shuts off. It sounds like water running through pipes.

Hissing

A brief hiss after the compressor stops is refrigerant equalizing pressure — normal. Hissing near the back during a defrost cycle is water dripping onto the warm defrost heater.

Popping

Thermal expansion of internal plastic components as temperatures change. Also common when ice cubes release from the ice maker tray.

Sounds That May Indicate a Problem

Loud Buzzing

Possible causes:

  • Ice buildup around the evaporator fan (most common)
  • Faulty water inlet valve (if connected to water line)
  • Failing compressor start relay
  • Condenser fan hitting debris

What to do: If buzzing is new or getting louder, check for ice buildup by removing the rear freezer panel. Clean condenser fan area. If buzzing persists, call for service.

Rattling

Possible causes:

  • Unit not level (vibrating against floor)
  • Items on top of the refrigerator vibrating
  • Condenser fan blade loose or hitting something
  • Compressor springs worn

What to do: Level the unit using adjustable feet. Remove items from top. Check condenser fan for debris.

Squealing or Screeching

Possible causes:

  • Evaporator fan motor bearings failing
  • Condenser fan motor wearing out
  • Compressor internal wear

What to do: This almost always requires professional repair. The fan motors will need replacement before they fail completely.

Knocking or Banging

Possible causes:

  • Compressor mounts deteriorating
  • Ice maker cycling (normal clunking)
  • Water hammer from plumbing (when ice maker fills)

What to do: If it's rhythmic and coming from inside the freezer, it's likely the ice maker (normal). If from the back/bottom, have the compressor mounts checked.

Constant Running (No Quiet Periods)

Possible causes:

  • Dirty condenser coils
  • Thermostat set too cold
  • Door seal leaking
  • Low refrigerant
  • Failing compressor

What to do: Clean condenser coils first. Check door seals. If it still runs constantly after 24 hours, call for service.
