Maytag Washer Thermostat Replacement Guide
A Maytag washer that ignores your temperature setting — washing cold when you chose warm, or running every cycle at one temperature — usually has a failed water-temperature thermistor, not a mechanical thermostat. Confirm the hot supply is actually reaching the machine first, then meter the sensor.
Modern Maytag washers do not use the mechanical thermostat you would find in a dryer. They use an electronic thermistor — an NTC sensor whose resistance falls as water warms. The control board reads that resistance, converts it to a temperature, and opens the hot and cold inlet valves to blend the water you asked for.
Thermistor, Not Thermostat#
The distinction matters when you are ordering parts. A dryer thermostat is a mechanical switch that snaps open and closed at a set temperature; a washer thermistor is a solid-state sensor with continuously variable resistance. North American Maytag washers make their wash temperature by mixing hot and cold supply water rather than heating it, so a standard residential model has no high-limit thermostat at all — just the thermistor reporting to the board. Some older models with an internal heater, mostly front-loaders built for other markets, add a high-limit as a heater safety, but that is the exception.

Signs the Thermistor Is Failing#
- Water temperature does not match the setting — the sensor reports the wrong value, so the board blends hot and cold in the wrong proportion
- Every cycle runs at the same temperature — the board cannot read the thermistor and falls back to a single default
- An F2 E1 code — the thermistor circuit has gone open or shorted
- Fill times drag on — the board keeps adding hot water because the sensor reports the temperature as too low
Rule Out the Plumbing First#
Before you condemn the sensor, make sure hot water is actually getting to the washer. Run the hot tap nearest the machine — if it takes ages to warm up, the washer is drawing cold water from the pipe, not misreading it. Check the inlet-valve screens for sediment that throttles hot flow, and confirm the supply hoses are on the right ports, hot to hot and cold to cold. These plumbing issues produce the exact same complaint as a bad thermistor and cost nothing to fix.

Testing and Replacing#
Meter the thermistor at room temperature: it should read roughly 40,000 to 55,000 ohms, dropping as it warms. An open or shorted reading confirms failure.
- Unplug the washer.
- Reach the outer tub — remove the rear panel on a front-loader, or tilt the cabinet back on a top-loader.
- Find the thermistor, a small probe set into the outer tub wall on a two-wire harness.
- Unplug the harness and release the probe from its clip or housing.
- Fit the new probe so its tip contacts the water path inside the tub.
- Reconnect, reassemble, and run a warm wash to confirm proper mixing.
Tools: a #2 Phillips, a multimeter, and a quarter-inch nut driver.
