Clean the Inlet Screen First#

The single most common cause of weak flow is not a dead valve — it is the mesh screen inside the valve inlet catching sediment from the supply line. Shut off the water, disconnect the supply line, pull the small screen with needle-nose pliers, rinse it under running water, and reinstall it. This costs nothing and clears roughly 40% of slow-dispenser and no-ice complaints.

Check Water Pressure#

The valve needs at least 20 psi to open fully. Low household pressure — common in rural areas or at peak demand — leaves the ice mold underfilled, producing small or hollow cubes that look like a valve fault. Test it by timing the dispenser into a measuring cup: you should get about 6 ounces in 10 seconds. If it is slower, chase the household pressure before buying a valve; a booster pump may be the real fix.

How the Valve Works#

Each solenoid controls a separate water path. When the ice maker calls for a fill, the board sends 120V to the ice-maker solenoid for roughly 7 seconds to meter a set volume into the mold; pressing the dispenser paddle energizes the dispenser solenoid for as long as you hold it. Each path has an internal diaphragm and a screen, and the diaphragm seals the path when the solenoid is off.

Replacing the Valve#

1. Unplug the refrigerator and shut off the water supply.
2. Pull the unit forward and remove the rear-lower access panel.
3. Disconnect the household supply line at the valve inlet with a wrench, catching drips with a towel.
4. Disconnect the internal outlet tubes — note which feeds the ice maker and which the dispenser.
5. Unplug the solenoid connectors and remove the valve bracket screws.
6. Fit the new valve, reconnect the tubes, supply line, and connectors, turn the water back on, and check every joint for leaks before restoring power.
7. Give the ice maker two to three hours to run its first cycle.

Maytag refrigerators are built on the Whirlpool platform, so the valve cross-references to a Whirlpool W10 or WP part number — the identical component under the Whirlpool label often costs less, so search both when ordering. It is also worth noting Maytag's 10-year limited warranty on the sealed system (compressor, evaporator, condenser, and tubing); check your model's status before paying for any sealed-system work.

Clean the condenser coils during any refrigerator repair. Dust and pet hair on the coils cut heat dissipation by up to 30 percent, making the compressor work harder and run hotter. A coil brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment at the base grille or rear takes minutes and is the highest-value refrigerator maintenance you can do. After the repair, give the box about a day to stabilize before judging performance. If the ice maker still will not fill after a new valve, walk back through the chain: the supply valve open, the filter not overdue, and the inlet solenoid clicking when it calls for water.
