LG Washer Water Inlet Valve Replacement — IE Error and Fill Problems
The water inlet valve on an LG washer controls hot and cold water flow into the tub. It is a dual-solenoid valve — one solenoid for hot water, one for cold. The board activates the appropriate solenoid(s) based on the selected wash temperature: cold cycle = cold solenoid only, warm = both, hot = hot solenoid only.
Dual Solenoid Design
Each solenoid operates independently. This means one water temperature can fail while others work:
- Cold cycle works but warm/hot does not → hot solenoid failed
- Hot/warm works but cold does not → cold solenoid failed
- No water at all on any setting → both solenoids failed, or water supply is off
Some LG washers add a third solenoid for the bleach dispenser, controlling a separate water path that flushes the dispenser during specific cycle stages.

Symptoms
| Symptom | Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| IE error (Inlet Error) | Valve, supply, screen, or pressure sensor |
| No water on any cycle | Both solenoids failed or water supply off |
| No hot water, cold works | Hot solenoid failed |
| No cold water, hot works | Cold solenoid failed |
| Slow fill, extends cycle time | Clogged inlet screen |
| Water continues filling after cycle ends | Solenoid stuck open — shut off supply |
| Bleach dispenser does not flush | Bleach solenoid failed |
Before Replacing the Valve
The IE error has multiple possible causes. Check in order:
- Water supply valves — are both hot and cold faucets fully open behind the washer?
- Supply hoses — kinked or clogged?
- Inlet screens — pull the screens from the valve inlets with pliers and check for mineral clogging. Clean with vinegar.
- Pressure sensor/air tube — if the sensor reports the tub is already full, the board will not open the valve
- Valve solenoids — test with multimeter

Testing the Solenoids
Disconnect power. Remove the rear panel or top panel (model-dependent) to access the valve. Disconnect the wire connectors from each solenoid coil. Test resistance: expected 500-1500 ohms per coil. Infinite = open (failed). Very low = shorted.

Replacement Steps
Shut off both water supply valves. Disconnect power. Disconnect the hot and cold supply hoses from the valve (have bucket and towels ready). Disconnect internal hoses from the valve outlets (spring clamps or push-fit). Disconnect wire harnesses. Remove the 2-3 mounting screws.
Install the new valve — connect internal hoses first, then mounting screws, wire harnesses, and supply hoses last. Tighten supply fittings hand-tight plus 1/4 turn (do not overtighten plastic valve ports).
Turn on water supply and check for leaks before restoring power. Run a Rinse cycle to test fill on cold, then a warm cycle to verify both solenoids.

Hard Water Prevention
In hard water areas, clean the inlet screens annually. Pull them with pliers, soak in vinegar for 20 minutes, rinse and reinstall. This prevents the gradual flow restriction that leads to IE errors and extended fill times.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG washer shows IE error. Do I need a new inlet valve?
Not necessarily. Check supply valves, hoses, and inlet screens first. IE means the tub did not fill within the timeout — the valve is one of several possible causes.
Water keeps running into my LG washer even when it is off. Is the valve stuck?
Yes — a solenoid is stuck open. Shut off the water supply immediately to prevent flooding. Replace the valve.
How long does an LG washer inlet valve last?
Typically 8-12 years. Hard water shortens lifespan to 5-8 years. Annual screen cleaning extends valve life.
