LG Refrigerator Motor Replacement — Fan Motors and Air Circulation
When people search for LG refrigerator motor replacement, they usually mean one of the fan motors — the evaporator fan or condenser fan. The compressor is technically a motor too, but it is covered separately due to its sealed-system complexity and 10-year warranty. The fan motors are much simpler and cheaper to replace.
Evaporator Fan Motor
The evaporator fan motor sits behind the rear panel inside the freezer compartment. It pulls air across the frozen evaporator coils and pushes it through ducts into both the freezer and refrigerator compartments. The damper assembly between compartments controls how much cold air reaches the fresh food section.
When this motor fails, the freezer stays cold near the coils but the refrigerator compartment warms because cold air is not being distributed. The motor can also fail partially — it runs slowly, producing weak airflow that keeps the fresh food section at 45-50F instead of the target 37F.

Condenser Fan Motor
The condenser fan motor is at the back bottom of the refrigerator, near the compressor. It blows ambient air across the condenser coils to dissipate heat from the refrigeration cycle. When this motor fails, the condenser coils cannot shed heat efficiently. The compressor overheats and cycles on thermal protection — both compartments warm up.
Testing the Motors
Both fan motors are simple AC motors tested with a multimeter. Disconnect power, access the motor, disconnect the wire connector, and measure resistance across the motor terminals. Expected: 200-2000 ohms depending on motor type. Infinite = open winding. Near-zero = shorted winding.
You can also spin the motor shaft by hand. It should turn freely with slight resistance. If it is stiff or grinding, the bearings have failed.

Evaporator Fan Replacement
Unplug refrigerator. Remove freezer shelves and drawers. Remove the rear freezer panel (6-8 Phillips screws, plus disconnect the ice maker wire harness if it crosses the panel). The fan motor is mounted on a bracket behind this panel. Disconnect the wire connector, remove mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new motor, and install.
Important: if ice buildup caused the fan to stop, defrost the unit fully before installing the new motor. Fix the defrost system failure first, or the ice will return and stop the new motor.
Condenser Fan Replacement
Pull the refrigerator away from the wall. Remove the rear bottom access panel. The fan is mounted next to the compressor. Disconnect the connector, remove mounting screws, swap motors, reassemble.
After replacing, clean the condenser coils while you have access — dust buildup on the coils reduces heat dissipation and is a common cause of condenser fan motor overheating.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG refrigerator makes a buzzing noise from the freezer. Is the motor bad?
Possibly, but check for ice buildup first. Ice forming on the evaporator coils can contact the fan blade, causing buzzing and grinding. Defrost and inspect before replacing the motor.
Are LG refrigerator fan motors covered by the 10-year warranty?
No. The 10-year warranty covers only the Linear Compressor. Fan motors are covered under the standard 1-year warranty.
Can a failed fan motor damage the compressor?
Yes. A failed condenser fan causes the compressor to overheat from inadequate heat dissipation. Prolonged overheating shortens compressor life. Replace the condenser fan promptly.
