Two hex sizes, and what happens when you bring the wrong one#
The other size in common use across appliance sheet metal is 1/4 inch — it is what the Whirlpool refrigerator beside this one on the showroom floor wants for part of its cabinet. The two are close enough that a 1/4 driver will go onto a 5/16 head and feel like it has engaged, and far enough apart that it is only holding the corners. Put any real torque through that and you round the head into a circle.
A rounded hex head on a refrigerator is worse than it sounds. These are not fasteners you can get a grip on from the side with pliers, because the panel they are holding is usually flush against something — a wall, a cabinet return, the unit's own frame. Once the flats are gone the only way forward is to drill the head off, which puts steel swarf inside a cabinet you are about to close up again.
The same failure arrives faster with a screwdriver. A hex head often carries a moulded cross or slot on its face, and it is there to help the assembly line start the screw, not to let you drive it. A blade or a Phillips in one of those cams straight out under load. Use the nut driver, which wraps the head rather than sitting in it, and the whole turn goes into the fastener instead of into deforming it.
There is a second, quieter reason to own the driver rather than a socket on a ratchet. A nut driver lets you start a fastener one-handed, and on a refrigerator you frequently have one hand committed to a panel that no longer has anything holding it up.
The flat blade and the pliers are not spares#
The flat-blade screwdriver is on the list for prying and for the occasional slotted machine screw — not for hex heads, and not as a lever against a painted seam you care about. The pliers are for spade terminals and for anything clamped, and they are the tool most likely to be used badly: gripping a fastener you have already rounded is how a bad afternoon becomes a bad week.
What is behind the panel matters more than the panel#
Two things sit directly behind the panels you are taking off, and both of them are named in the safety warning above rather than being general caution. The condenser fan carries blades that turn freely once the power is off, and a hand pushed blind into that space to feel for a fastener finds them edge-on. The evaporator fins are thin aluminium in a dense stack, and they cut across the back of the fingers rather than into the pad, which is the part people do not anticipate.
Neither is a reason to avoid the job. Both are reasons to look into a compartment before you reach into it, and to move the panel away from you rather than pulling your hand out through the gap you just made.
The things this page deliberately does not give you#
There is no screw count anywhere here, no series split and no model number. Count what is in front of you and photograph any connector before it comes apart. A count borrowed from a different configuration is worse than no count at all: it either sends you hunting for a fastener that was never fitted, or it tells you the panel is free while one is still holding it, which is the moment people pull hard enough to bend something.

Reassembly Notes#
Sheet-metal fasteners cut their own thread on the way in, and a refrigerator gives you more chances than most appliances to cut a second one by accident. Start every fastener by hand and turn it backwards until you feel it drop into the thread that is already there, then drive it. Snug is the target. These screws hold thin steel to thin steel, and going past snug dimples the panel around the head and pulls its edge out of line with whatever it meets.
Work back out through the same routes you came in by, and treat the interior cover as the one that has to be right rather than merely on. It sits against the coldest part of the cabinet, and a panel left proud or pinched at one corner changes how that compartment behaves long after you have forgotten you were in there. Seat it square, get every fastener started before you drive any of them home, and do not use the last screw to pull a misaligned panel into place.
Anything you disturbed at the control panel goes back by its latch and not by pulling on the wire behind it. Route every harness where it already lay — the rear panel in particular is where a harness gets trapped between the panel edge and the cabinet, and it will not announce itself until something chafes through months later.
Before power goes back on, check the one thing that can be checked by eye and by hand: that nothing you moved, and nothing you dropped, is sitting where the condenser fan blade sweeps. Turn the blade through a full revolution by hand and listen for contact. Then close up, restore the breaker, and give the unit a run before you call the job finished rather than deciding at the moment the panel goes back on.
