LG Refrigerator Fan Replacement — Evaporator and Condenser Fans
LG refrigerators have two critical fan motors that serve completely different functions. Replacing the wrong one wastes money and leaves the cooling problem unsolved.
Two Fans, Two Functions
Evaporator fan: Inside the freezer compartment behind the rear panel. Circulates cold air from the evaporator coils through both the freezer and fresh food compartments (via damper-controlled air vents). When this fan fails, the freezer gets cold near the coils but the refrigerator compartment warms up because cold air is not being circulated.
Condenser fan: Behind the refrigerator at the bottom, near the compressor. Blows air across the condenser coils to dissipate heat. When this fan fails, the compressor overheats and the entire refrigerator stops cooling. The compressor may cycle on and off on thermal protection.

Symptoms by Fan
| Symptom | Fan |
|---|---|
| Freezer cold but refrigerator warm | Evaporator fan |
| Both compartments warm, compressor hot | Condenser fan |
| Er FF error code | Evaporator fan (Freezer Fan) |
| Loud buzzing from inside the freezer | Evaporator fan (or ice hitting the blade) |
| Loud humming from the back/bottom of the unit | Condenser fan |
The Ice Buildup Problem
The most common evaporator fan issue on LG refrigerators is not a failed motor — it is ice buildup on the evaporator coils that blocks the fan blade. When the defrost system fails (defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/board), ice accumulates on the coils and eventually reaches the fan blade, stopping it. You hear buzzing or scraping as the blade hits the ice.
Fix: Defrost the unit manually (unplug for 24 hours with doors open) and then diagnose and fix the defrost system failure. If the fan motor itself tests good after thawing, the motor is fine — the defrost system was the real problem.

Evaporator Fan Replacement
Disconnect power. Remove freezer shelves and the rear panel inside the freezer (6-8 Phillips screws). The fan motor is mounted behind this panel on a bracket. Disconnect the wire connector, remove the mounting screws, and slide the motor and blade assembly out. Transfer the blade to the new motor if not included. Reassemble.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Condenser Fan Replacement
Disconnect power. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall. Remove the rear bottom access panel. The condenser fan is mounted near the compressor. Disconnect the wire connector, remove mounting screws, and swap.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG refrigerator freezer is cold but the fridge is warm. Is the fan broken?
Check the evaporator fan. Open the freezer and listen — if you do not hear the fan running when the door switch is pressed in, the fan has failed or is blocked by ice. Inspect for ice buildup behind the rear panel.
My LG refrigerator shows Er FF. What does that mean?
Er FF = Freezer Fan error. The control board detects the evaporator fan is not spinning. Could be a failed motor, a wiring issue, or ice blocking the blade. Defrost and inspect before replacing the motor.
Can I run my LG refrigerator with a broken condenser fan temporarily?
Briefly, but the compressor will overheat and cycle on thermal protection. This shortens compressor life. Replace the condenser fan promptly — it is an inexpensive part ($20-$60).
