LG Dryer Blower Fan Replacement — The Component Behind Most Dryer Noise
The blower fan (blower wheel) in an LG dryer is a plastic or composite impeller mounted on the motor shaft that pulls heated air through the drum and pushes it out the exhaust vent. It is the single component most responsible for proper dryer airflow and drying performance. When the blower wheel cracks, loses a blade, or has a loose hub, the dryer gets noisy, drying times increase dramatically, and the dryer may overheat.
How the LG Dryer Blower Works
The blower wheel sits in a housing between the drum and the exhaust vent connection. The drum motor drives both the drum (via a belt) and the blower wheel (directly on the motor shaft). Air is pulled through the drum by the blower, passes through the lint screen area, and is pushed out the exhaust duct.
Unlike some brands where the blower is a separate motor, LG dryers use the drum motor to drive the blower directly. This means blower problems are sometimes misdiagnosed as motor problems because the noise comes from the same area.

Blower Wheel Failure Symptoms
- Thumping or rattling noise during operation — a cracked blade or foreign object (sock, dryer sheet) caught in the blower housing
- High-pitched squealing — the blower hub is loose on the motor shaft, causing the wheel to wobble
- Extended drying times — a broken blade reduces airflow below the threshold needed for efficient drying
- Dryer overheating or tripping the thermal fuse — reduced airflow causes heat buildup in the drum
- Lint accumulating faster than normal at the exhaust vent — a damaged blower creates turbulent airflow that carries more lint past the screen

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for front panel, top panel, and rear panel screws
- 5/16 inch nut driver — for blower housing clamp on some models
- Channel-lock pliers — to hold the motor shaft while removing the blower wheel clamp
- Flathead screwdriver — to pry the blower wheel off the shaft if corroded in place
Accessing the Blower Wheel
The blower wheel is located behind the drum, between the rear bulkhead and the exhaust vent connection. To access it:
- Disconnect power (240V — both breaker poles)
- Remove the top panel (2 screws at rear, slide back)
- Remove the front panel (disconnect the door switch wires, remove support screws)
- Remove the drum belt from the idler pulley and motor shaft
- Lift the drum out (it helps to have a second person)
- The blower wheel is now visible on the motor shaft behind the rear bulkhead
The blower wheel attaches to the motor shaft with a clamp or press-fit. Some models use a retaining clip. Hold the motor shaft with pliers while unscrewing the clamp.

Inspection Before Replacement
Before ordering a new blower wheel, inspect the old one:
- Cracked or missing blades — replace
- Loose hub (wobbles on the shaft) — replace
- Foreign object in housing — a trapped sock or dryer sheet causes noise without blade damage. Remove the object and test before ordering parts
- Melted or warped blades — this indicates an overheating issue upstream (clogged vent, failed thermostat). Fix the cause before installing a new wheel
Vent Restriction — The Hidden Cause
Many blower wheel replacements are unnecessary. A restricted exhaust vent forces the blower to work harder, causing noise and vibration that mimics wheel failure. Before replacing the wheel, disconnect the exhaust duct from the back of the dryer and run a timed dry cycle. If the noise stops and drying performance improves, the vent is restricted — clean it instead of replacing the wheel.
LG recommends professional vent cleaning annually. Dryer fires from lint-clogged vents are a genuine safety hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dryer is making a loud thumping noise. Is it the blower wheel?
Likely, but check for foreign objects in the drum first (coins, buttons). If the noise comes from the rear of the dryer (behind the drum), the blower wheel is the primary suspect. Remove the drum and inspect the wheel for cracked or missing blades.
Can a damaged blower wheel cause my LG dryer to overheat?
Yes. A broken blade reduces exhaust airflow, causing heat to accumulate in the drum. This can trip the thermal fuse or cycling thermostat. Replacing the blower wheel restores proper airflow and operating temperature.
How long does an LG dryer blower wheel last?
Typically 10-15 years. Premature failure is usually caused by foreign objects hitting the blades or exhaust vent restriction forcing the wheel to work under higher back-pressure. Keeping the vent clean extends blower life.
