LG Dryer Door Latch Replacement — Mechanical Catch vs Door Switch
LG dryer door latches are simpler than dishwasher or washer latches because dryers do not need a watertight seal. The latch has two jobs: hold the door closed during tumbling, and tell the control board the door is shut via a door switch. These are two separate components on LG dryers — the mechanical catch/strike and the electrical door switch are independently replaceable.
Mechanical Catch vs Electrical Switch
Door catch (strike): The metal or plastic hook on the door that grabs the latch receiver on the dryer frame. When this breaks or bends, the door will not stay closed — it pops open during tumbling, stopping the dryer mid-cycle.
Door switch: A small plunger-activated switch mounted in the dryer front panel near the door opening. When the door closes, the plunger is depressed and the switch sends a signal to the control board. If the switch fails, the dryer will not start even though the door is physically closed and latched.
These are distinct failure modes with different fixes. A door that pops open = catch/strike. A closed door but dryer will not start = door switch.

Door Catch Replacement
The catch is mounted on the inside face of the door with 1-2 Phillips screws or rivets. Open the door fully. Remove the screws. If riveted, drill out the rivets with a 1/8 inch bit. Position the new catch and secure with screws (replacement kits include screws even if the original was riveted). Test by closing the door — it should click firmly.
Door Switch Replacement
Disconnect power. Access the switch from behind the front panel — on most LG dryers, remove the top panel first (2 screws at rear, slide back), then the front panel (screws under the top panel). The door switch is mounted near the door opening with a wire harness connector.
Test the switch first: disconnect the wires, set multimeter to continuity. Press the plunger — you should get continuity. Release — continuity should break. If the switch does not toggle cleanly, replace it.
Swap is simple — 1-2 mounting screws, one connector. Install the new switch and verify the plunger aligns with the door mechanism when the front panel is reassembled.

WashTower Considerations
On LG WashTower models, the dryer door is at the top of the unit. The catch mechanism is the same design but the switch wiring routes through a longer harness. Accessing the switch requires removing the dryer top panel from the stacked unit, which is more awkward than a standalone dryer but not technically harder.
Lifespan
Door catches last 8-15 years depending on how gently the door is treated. Door switches last 10-20 years — they have limited mechanical travel and rarely fail. When either component does fail, the replacement is a $15-$55 part and a 20-minute job.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dryer door closes fine but the dryer will not start. Is the latch bad?
The door switch is more likely the problem than the mechanical latch. The catch holds the door closed; the switch tells the board the door is closed. Test the switch with a multimeter — if it does not toggle, replace it ($10-$30).
Can I run the LG dryer with a broken door catch by taping the door shut?
Do not do this. The door switch is a safety interlock designed to stop the dryer if the door opens during tumbling. Taping the door bypasses this safety function and creates a burn and fire hazard.
The LG dryer door catch is plastic. Can I get a metal replacement?
Some aftermarket kits include a metal reinforcement plate. The OEM catch on most LG models is a reinforced polymer that holds up well under normal use. If the door gets slammed frequently, a metal aftermarket catch is a reasonable upgrade.
