LG Dishwasher Won't Fill With Water — Inlet Valve and Supply Diagnostics

An LG dishwasher that fails to fill with water cannot begin washing — the control board will not energize the Inverter Direct Drive motor or heating element without detecting minimum water level in the tub. LG displays error code IE (inlet error) when the fill process does not achieve the required water level within the allotted time. This is one of the simpler failure categories to diagnose on LG dishwashers because the fill system involves fewer components than the wash or drain systems.

The water supply path on LG LDT/LDP models flows through: household supply valve → supply hose → inlet valve mesh screen → water inlet valve solenoid (5220FR2006H) → internal fill hose → tub. A blockage or failure at any point prevents filling.

Quick Checks Before Disassembly

1. Water Supply Valve

Verify the household water supply valve (typically under the sink) is fully open. After plumbing work, appliance installation, or home sales, these valves are sometimes partially or fully closed.

Test: Disconnect the supply hose from the dishwasher inlet valve (10mm wrench). Hold the hose end over a bucket and briefly open the supply valve. Water should flow freely with good pressure. No flow = valve closed or supply pipe issue.

2. Supply Hose Condition

The flexible braided hose between the supply valve and the dishwasher can kink, collapse internally (rubber liner delamination), or become blocked by sediment:

• Inspect for visible kinks along the entire run
• If the hose is more than 8-10 years old, internal deterioration is possible even without visible external damage
• Mineral deposits can accumulate inside, narrowing the passage

3. LG Inlet Valve Mesh Screen

The water inlet valve (5220FR2006H) on LG models has a built-in mesh screen at the water inlet port. This screen traps sediment from the supply line before it reaches the solenoid mechanism:

1. Turn off the water supply
2. Disconnect the supply hose from the inlet valve (10mm wrench at the valve fitting)
3. Look inside the valve inlet port — you will see a fine mesh screen
4. If the screen is clogged with sediment, mineral deposits, or debris, water flow is restricted
5. Clean with a toothbrush and white vinegar. Do NOT remove the screen (it is pressed in and not designed for removal)
6. Reconnect and test

LG-specific note: This screen is a common failure point in areas with hard water or sediment-heavy supply. It can restrict flow enough to prevent filling within the board's timeout period, triggering IE error, even though some water does eventually pass.

Diagnosing the Inlet Valve

Electrical Test

The inlet valve solenoid opens when the control board energizes it with 120V AC:

1. Disconnect power at circuit breaker
2. Access the inlet valve (behind the lower left panel on most LDT/LDP models)
3. Disconnect the valve's electrical connector
4. Measure solenoid coil resistance: should read 500-1,500 ohms (varies by model year)
5. Infinite resistance = solenoid coil burned out (valve cannot open)
6. If resistance is normal, the valve can potentially function

Mechanical Test

Even with a good solenoid coil, the valve can fail mechanically:

• The internal diaphragm can become stiff or stuck (mineral deposits)
• The plunger mechanism can seize from corrosion
• The spring return can weaken (valve opens sluggishly)

Test with power: During a fill attempt, measure voltage at the valve connector — should read 120V AC when the board commands fill. If 120V is present but the valve does not open (no water flow), the valve has failed mechanically.

Water Pressure Requirement

LG specifies minimum 20 PSI water pressure at the inlet valve for reliable operation. Below this pressure, the valve may not open fully (the solenoid requires water pressure assistance to fully retract the diaphragm on some models) or fills too slowly for the board's timeout window.

Testing pressure: A simple test is timing how long it takes to fill a 1-gallon container from the disconnected supply hose. At 20 PSI, filling should take less than 30 seconds. Significantly longer indicates low pressure.

Error Code IE — Detailed Interpretation

When IE appears on your LG dishwasher:

• The board commanded the inlet valve to open
• After the fill timeout period (typically 8-12 minutes), water level did not reach minimum threshold
• The board has halted the cycle

IE does not necessarily mean zero water entered: Partial fill within the timeout window still triggers IE. Open the door — if there is some water in the tub (but not the full expected level), the problem is restricted flow rather than total blockage.

Float Switch Interference

LG dishwashers have a base pan float switch that triggers error code AE when water is detected in the base pan. In some failure scenarios, a previous leak deposited water in the base pan that never fully dried. The float remains triggered, and the control board refuses to fill (interpreting the AE condition as an active flood requiring drain-only operation).

Check: Remove the kick panel and inspect the base pan for any standing water or debris holding the float up. Dry completely and verify the float drops freely.

Control Board Fill Relay

Rarely, the relay that powers the inlet valve fails:

• Other cycle operations function (motor, heater, drain) but fill never initiates
• No voltage appears at the valve connector during fill attempts
