KitchenAid Gas Stove Burner Won't Light — Troubleshooting Guide
A KitchenAid gas range surface burner that won't light (clicks but no flame, or no click at all) has an ignition system problem at the burner assembly level. KitchenAid gas ranges use spark ignition (not standing pilot) with individual spark electrodes at each burner. The most common cause is moisture or food debris blocking the spark or gas flow — a simple cleaning fix in the majority of cases.
How KitchenAid Surface Burner Ignition Works
Each burner has:
- Spark electrode (igniter) — a small ceramic-insulated electrode that creates a spark when energized
- Burner cap — sits on top of the burner base, distributes gas evenly in a ring
- Burner base — contains gas ports (tiny holes) around the perimeter
- Gas valve — controlled by the knob, regulates gas flow to the burner
When you turn the knob to LITE: the spark module energizes the electrode, creating a continuous clicking spark. Simultaneously, the gas valve opens. The spark ignites the gas as it exits the ports. All burner electrodes click simultaneously (by design) — if you turn one knob to LITE, you will hear clicking at all burners. This is normal.

Burner Cap Misaligned or Wet — #1 Cause (40% of Cases)
Cap Misalignment
KitchenAid burner caps (especially on Torch Burner 20,000 BTU models and dual-ring burners) must sit perfectly flat and centered on the burner base. If the cap is tilted even slightly (from being removed during cleaning and not replaced correctly), gas flows unevenly and may not reach the spark electrode position.
Fix: Remove the cast iron grate. Lift the burner cap off and reseat it carefully — it should drop into place with the locating tab (if present) aligned with the notch in the base. The cap should sit perfectly flat with no rocking.
Cap Wet (After Cleaning or Boilover)
Water on or under the burner cap prevents gas from flowing through the ports and can short-circuit the spark electrode. This is the #1 cause of "burner won't light after cleaning the stove."
Fix: Remove the cap and dry it thoroughly with a towel. Use a cotton swab or compressed air to clear moisture from the gas ports (tiny holes in the burner base). Wait 15 minutes before attempting ignition.
Clogged Burner Ports (25% of Cases)
The small gas ports (holes) around the burner base can clog with:
- Boiled-over food residue
- Grease buildup
- Cleaning product residue
- Spilled sugar that caramelized
Fix: With the cap removed, use a straightened paper clip or sewing needle to clear each individual port. Do not use a toothpick (it can break and lodge inside). Then clean the entire burner base with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. Never use a knife or metal scraper on aluminum burner bases — this can enlarge the ports and affect flame pattern.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Spark Electrode Issues (15% of Cases)
Electrode Cracked or Dirty
The spark electrode is a small white ceramic post with a metal tip. Food splatter or grease buildup on the electrode insulates the tip, preventing the spark from jumping to ground (the burner base). A cracked ceramic insulator can short the spark to ground before it reaches the electrode tip.
Fix: Clean the electrode tip with a dry toothbrush or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Do NOT use water near the electrode while the stove is connected. If the ceramic insulator is cracked, replace the electrode.
Electrode Gap Too Wide
The gap between the electrode tip and the burner base should be approximately 1/8 inch (3mm). If the electrode has shifted (from being bumped during cleaning), the gap may be too wide for the spark to jump.
Fix: Gently bend the electrode ground (not the electrode itself) to restore proper gap. The spark should jump readily from the tip to the burner base.
Parts Cost: $15–$40 (spark electrode) Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200
Spark Module Failure (10% of Cases)
The spark module (ignition module) generates high-voltage pulses sent to all burner electrodes simultaneously. If the module fails, no burners will click when any knob is turned to LITE.
Diagnosis: If ALL burners fail to click simultaneously, the spark module is likely failed. If only one burner fails to click (but others do), the issue is specific to that burner's wiring or electrode.
Parts Cost: $40–$80 (spark module) Professional Repair Cost: $130–$240

Gas Supply Issues (5% of Cases)
Burner Valve Clogged
Rarely, the internal passages of a burner valve can become partially blocked with old grease or debris, reducing gas flow to the point where ignition fails even with a good spark.
Gas Supply Off
Verify the main gas supply valve (behind or beneath the range) is fully open. After kitchen renovations, gas line work, or earthquake shutoff valve trips, the supply may be partially or fully closed.
KitchenAid Torch Burner (20,000 BTU) — Specific Notes
KitchenAid professional-style ranges feature the Torch Burner with up to 20,000 BTU output. This burner has a dual-ring design (inner and outer flame ring) with its own cap alignment requirements. The cap is heavier than standard burners and must seat precisely for both flame rings to ignite properly. If only the inner ring lights (outer ring does not ignite), the outer cap ports are clogged or the cap is slightly misaligned.

Manual Lighting (Temporary)
While waiting for parts, you can safely light any KitchenAid gas burner with a long match or lighter:
- Turn the knob to LITE.
- Hold a lit match or click lighter at the burner base, near the gas ports.
- Gas should ignite within 2–3 seconds of knob reaching LITE.
If gas does not flow (you do not smell gas after 5 seconds with the knob at LITE), the issue is gas supply or valve — not ignition.
