The short answer
F9-2 covers the door latch and the door lock switch together: the control drove the lock and did not get back the confirmation it wanted. The oven is usually still usable for normal cooking once the code is cleared, but any cycle that needs a locked door will refuse.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F9-2 | There may be a problem with the Oven Door Latch, the Door Lock Switch, or the associated wiring. |
What you observe, and what to record
- The code lands at the start of a self-clean cycle — That is the only routine that drives the lock, so it is the routine that finds the fault.
- Whether the code is steady or intermittent — A fault that is present every time is far quicker to find than one that comes and goes, and the two are diagnosed differently.
- Whether the display shows anything besides the code — A second code, a flashing indicator or a missing segment is information the code number alone does not carry.
Causes, most likely first on this oven
- The lock switch is not being reached at the end of travel — First: the switch is the confirmation, and a mechanism that is even slightly stiff stops short of it. Baked-on spill in the latch track is the usual reason.
- A wiring fault between the lock assembly and the control — Second, because the harness crosses the hottest part of the cabinet and the connector shell is where it gives out.
- The latch motor has lost torque — Third: it is a small motor and when it weakens it still moves, just not far enough — which reads exactly like a jam.
Check in this order, and why
- Let the cavity cool right down — The lock is inhibited above its own threshold, so a warm oven makes every check ambiguous.
- Cycle power and watch what the lock does on restore — A lock that re-homes cleanly tells you the mechanism is free and the fault is in the confirmation path.
- Start a clean cycle and watch the bolt — Whether it stops short or goes fully home splits the two likeliest causes.
What an owner can safely check
- Power the oven down at the breaker and restore it — The documented first move, and it releases a lock that was simply mid-travel.
About 5 min
- Copy the full model number from the rating plate — Brand code indexes are shared across model lines, and the model number is what lets the code be read against the right one.
About 10 min
- Check the breaker for the appliance, fully off and on — A breaker that has tripped partway does not look tripped. A definite off, then on.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE before removing the top trim — The lock motor and its harness are behind live terminals.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Let the cavity cool completely first: the racks, the door glass and the trim all hold heat for far longer than the display suggests, and the lock will not release above its own threshold anyway.
When to call a technician
Call when the bolt will not complete its travel after the track is clean, when the door is locked with food inside, or when the lock moves correctly and the code still appears. The last case is a confirmation-path fault and needs a meter on the switch and harness, which is a service call rather than an owner check.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F9-2 for KitchenAid ovens in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
