The short answer
F9 is reported when the oven could not carry out the function it was asked for, and names the appliance control board, the relay control board or the wiring between them. Two boards are involved, which matters: the one that decides and the one that switches, and they fail in different ways.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F9 | The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the Appliance Control Board, the Relay Control Board, or the associated wiring. |
What you observe, and what to record
- A requested function simply does not happen — The instruction is accepted, the code lands, nothing heats.
- Whether the code followed any recent work — An installation, a service visit, plumbing or electrical work: anything done near the appliance in the weeks before is worth mentioning.
- Whether the code clears when power is removed — Cut the supply for a minute and watch. A code that clears and stays away behaves completely differently from one that returns within a cycle, and nobody but you can observe the difference.
Causes, most likely first on this oven
- A connector between the two boards that has loosened — First: the two boards talk over a harness in a bay that thermally cycles every single use, and this is the cheapest thing that produces the symptom.
- A failed relay on the relay control board — Second, and specific to this code: the relays carry element current, they are the hardest-worked components on either board, and a welded or open relay reads exactly as a function that could not be executed.
- The appliance control board itself — Third: it is the decision-maker, and when it goes the failure is usually total rather than partial.
Check in this order, and why
- Cut power for several minutes and try the same function again — A function that works once after a reset and fails again is a relay or a connector, not a dead board.
- Identify which function fails — Bake, broil, convection and clean do not use the same relays, and the pattern points at the part.
- Try the other cavity if there is one — Shared boards and separate relays mean the pattern across cavities is diagnostic.
What an owner can safely check
- Power down at the breaker for several minutes, then restore — The documented first move for this family of codes.
About 5 min
- Check whether the appliance is still in warranty — Worth two minutes before anyone is paid: the purchase date and the model number decide it, and some components carry longer cover than the appliance.
About 10 min
- Photograph the display with the code showing — Codes are easy to transcribe wrongly and a photograph is not. It also timestamps the fault, which matters if it becomes intermittent.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE — both boards are behind live terminals — There is no owner-side check past this point.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A wall oven or range is heavy and weighted towards the front: never let the open door carry the weight of the unit, and do not move one out of its housing without a second pair of hands.
When to call a technician
Call promptly. This code names the parts that switch mains current to the elements, and a relay that has welded closed will keep an element live regardless of what the display says. If the oven heats when it is off, kill the breaker and leave it off until a technician has been.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F9 for KitchenAid ovens in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
