The reading in two sentences
On a KitchenAid cooktop, E_03 means an object, liquid or soil is putting pressure on the control panel, and the published remedy is to remove it and wipe the panel. The cooktop is not controllable while the panel is held, so clear and wipe it before trying to cook. The first two checks below need no tools and no panel off; anything past them is a service call.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E_03 | Remove any objects left on the control area, and/or wipe any debris from the control panel surface. An object, liquids, or soils are putting pressure on the control panel and causing this error. |
What else is happening when this shows
- The panel will not respond however carefully you press — A control that already sees a press ignores every other one.
- Tones sound with nothing being touched — The panel is reacting to something on its surface rather than to a finger.
- NEAR MISS — the panel is dark and does nothing at all — That is a supply or a link fault rather than a surface one, and it is checked differently.
What triggers E_03, most likely first
- An object left on the control area — It goes first because the published remedy names it: a cloth, a lid, a phone or a utensil resting on the control reads as a permanent press and locks out everything else.
- A worn or delaminated touch membrane — It ranks here because it is a genuine failure and it presents identically, but it costs money to guess at and the three causes above cost nothing.
- A failed interface board behind the panel — Last: the expensive candidate, and the only honest way to reach it is to have the surface clean, dry and unloaded first.
The order to work through
- Clear the whole control area, including anything overhanging it — Not most of it: a cloth draped across the edge counts.
- Note whether the fault follows cooking, cleaning or steam — A moisture-linked pattern is diagnostic and it costs nothing to observe.
- Test each key in turn and write down which respond — A map of live and dead keys separates a local cause from a whole-panel failure.
- Body: Map which keys work before cleaning anything — a single dead key and a whole dead panel are different faults with different costs.
The reset and the checks that follow it
- Clear the control area, wipe it with detergent on the cloth, dry it fully and power-cycle at the breaker — Dry completely before restoring power so the control reads a clean surface from cold.
Tools: cloth, mild detergentAbout 15 min
- Let a steamed-up panel dry out before judging it — If the fault follows steam, leave the appliance off and dry until the glass is clear, then retest.
About 60 min
- Take everything off the panel and wipe it dry — A dry cloth, then a dry pass. Many of these codes clear here and never return.
Tools: dry clothAbout 5 min
- STOP HERE — the membrane and its connector are behind the glass — Getting behind a control panel means live terminals, so that is service work.
Before a panel comes off
Safety
Switch the cooktop off at its circuit breaker before anything is opened; it carries a heavy load and stored charge remains after the power is off. Let the glass cool on its own. On a gas model, never switch anything on or off if you smell gas: leave and call the gas utility from outside.
Where an owner check ends
Call once the surface is clean, dry and clear, the appliance has had a full power cycle, and the panel still will not accept input.
Other codes on a KitchenAid cooktop
What is deliberately not here
Treat this as the general KitchenAid cooktop reading. It stops short of anything model-specific — part numbers, harness colours, connector layouts and service-mode entry — because those differ by family and a technician takes them from the rating plate rather than from a code. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked from the code index below and is the closer answer.
