The reading in two sentences
Read C82 as this: the pan or pot is not the right size for the zone. Every other zone is unaffected, and the zone itself works as soon as a pan it can detect is on it. You can settle whether this is a one-off or a real fault yourself; naming the failed part is not owner work.

| C82 | Pan/pot is not the right size. |
What else is happening when this shows
- The zone works as soon as a larger pan goes on it — Which settles the question in one move.
- The code follows a particular pan around the hob — That is the clearest evidence there is that the pan and not the appliance is being reported.
- The zone works with a different pan — Swapping the pan is the whole test, and it takes a moment.
What triggers C82, most likely first
- A base too small for the zone — It goes first because the published meaning names it: detection needs enough base over the coil, and a small pan on a large zone is invisible to it.
- A pan overhanging the zone marking — A pan pushed to the edge has its base partly off the coil, which is the same problem seen from the other side and is fixed by centring it.
- A genuine fault in the zone or its detection circuit — Last, and only after the pan has been changed: if a known-good pan on the marking still fails on that zone alone, the appliance is the remaining candidate.
The order to work through
- Try the same pan on a larger or smaller zone — If it works on one and not the other, size is the whole answer.
- Compare the pan base against the zone marking on the glass — The marking is the detection area, not a decoration.
- Try the same pan on a different zone — If the fault follows the pan, you are finished: the appliance is behaving correctly.
- Body: Start with position and cleanliness, because both are free and both break detection in exactly the way the code describes.
The reset and the checks that follow it
- Swap in a pan you know the appliance accepts — One swap on one zone is the entire diagnosis for most of these codes.
About 5 min
- Match the pan to the zone marking and centre it, then select the zone again — Use the smallest zone for a small pan rather than the nearest one.
About 5 min
- Centre the pan on the zone marking and retry — Square on the marking, not near it. Then select the zone again from cold.
About 2 min
- STOP HERE if one zone rejects every pan — That points inside the appliance, where the coil and its detection circuit are service items.
Before a panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the cooktop at its circuit breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this is a fixed high-current appliance rather than one you unplug. Put nothing cold or wet on hot glass. On a gas model, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
Where an owner check ends
Call if the zone cuts out under a pan it previously accepted, or if the glass above it is cracked or discoloured.
Other codes on a KitchenAid cooktop
What is deliberately not here
Treat this as the general KitchenAid cooktop reading. It stops short of anything model-specific — part numbers, harness colours, connector layouts and service-mode entry — because those differ by family and a technician takes them from the rating plate rather than from a code. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked from the code index below and is the closer answer.
