Look behind the freezer panel before reading the code
If the rear wall of the freezer carries a sheet of frost rather than a light dusting, the defrost system is your answer and the code is a symptom. Note whether the fresh-food side is warm while the freezer still holds; that combination is the classic presentation and it tells a technician more than any number.
What to look for
- A solid sheet of frost on the rear wall of the freezer — Airflow is being blocked by ice, which is the mechanism behind most of these codes.
- The fresh-food compartment warms while the freezer stays cold — Air is not reaching the upper compartment, which is exactly what a frosted evaporator produces.
- The compressor seems to run constantly — A cabinet that cannot reach temperature never stops trying, and that is the same fault from the other side.
- A code appears and clears itself after some hours — Consistent with a defrost cycle that runs sometimes and not reliably.
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers — Melt water that cannot reach the drain, which is a related and common defrost-side problem.
- NEAR MISS: the display is erratic as the door moves — That is the door harness, and it is covered on the companion page.
Ranked for the cabinet side
- A defrost heater or thermostat that has stopped working — First, because the defrost system is the hardest-working and most failure-prone part of a frost-free refrigerator, and because frost on the rear wall is visible confirmation.
- A blocked defrost drain — Second. Melt water that cannot leave refreezes at the bottom of the evaporator and slowly builds the same blockage from underneath.
- The evaporator fan not running — Third. It moves air between compartments, and when it stops the fresh-food side warms while the freezer stays cold.
- The main control board — Last. It decides when defrost runs, so it can be the cause, but it sits behind three parts that fail far more often.
Look, then measure
- Empty the freezer and look at its rear wall — Frost sheeting there is the single most decisive observation available, and it is free.
- Compare the two compartments with a thermometer — A cold freezer over a warm fridge is the signature, and it needs measuring rather than guessing.
- Listen for the evaporator fan with the freezer door held closed by hand — The fan stops when the door opens, so the switch has to be held to hear it running.
- Only then treat the code as the primary information — Three visible, measurable checks sit in front of it and all of them are free.
Owner checks
- Take everything out of the freezer and inspect the rear wall — A light dusting is normal. A continuous sheet is the finding this page turns on.
Tools: flashlightAbout 15 min
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight — A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and a freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
Tools: thermometerAbout 15 min
- Press and hold the freezer door switch and listen for the fan — A fan that does not run with the door shut explains a warm fresh-food compartment on its own.
About 10 min
- Empty the appliance, switch it off and let it stand open for several hours — A full manual defrost restores cooling temporarily and confirms ice was the cause.
Tools: towelsAbout 45 min
- STOP before the freezer rear panel is removed — The heater and the evaporator sit behind it beside live wiring, and that is the boundary.
Before anything is opened
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never use a heat gun or a sharp tool to clear ice from an evaporator: the tubing is thin-walled and puncturing it converts a routine repair into a sealed-system one. Move perishable food to a cooler before a manual defrost.
When to call
Call once you have seen frost on the rear wall or measured a cold freezer over a warm refrigerator, because the defrost components need measuring and the panel has to come off. Call promptly if the compressor runs without stopping for a day or more, if there is a burning smell at the back, or if the cabinet will not hold food safely. A manual defrost buys time; it is not the repair.

Scope of this page
This is the cabinet-side view of the Kenmore refrigerator class; the door display and dispenser are covered on the companion page linked above. Heater references, panel fixings and defrost timing differ by builder, so they belong on the family page for your model, which is the more specific answer where it exists.
