Listen for the pattern
Stand beside the cabinet for ten minutes and count. A click followed by a faint hum that dies, repeating on a regular interval, means the compressor is trying and not running. That is a genuine fault and it is not an owner repair, but identifying it saves a diagnostic visit and tells you how urgent the situation is.
What you hear and measure
- A click every few minutes with no sustained running — The compressor attempting to start and dropping out. The most diagnostic sound a refrigerator makes.
- Both compartments are warming at a similar rate — Nothing is being cooled at all, which distinguishes this from an airflow or defrost problem.
- The cabinet is silent apart from those clicks — No fan, no compressor. The appliance has power and nothing is running.
- A buzz or rattle if the relay is nudged — Worth noting, though nothing should be nudged while the appliance is energised.
- The freezer holds but the fridge warms — Not this page. That is an airflow or defrost pattern and it has its own investigation.
- NEAR MISS: everything is dead and the light is off — That is a supply question, and it is checked at the socket and the breaker first.
Ranked for a cabinet that clicks
- The compressor start relay or its overload — First, because it is the part designed to handle the hardest moment in the appliance's operation, it is a known wear item, and its failure produces exactly this repeating pattern.
- A compressor that cannot start under load — Second. It gives the same sound as a failed relay, which is why the two are diagnosed together and why an owner should not try to distinguish them.
- A condenser coil so blocked that the system cannot equalise — Third. A compressor that is asked to start against high pressure may not manage it, and a blanketed coil is what produces that pressure.
- The control board not calling for cooling — Last. It produces silence rather than clicking, so the sound itself largely rules it out.
Listen, measure, then stop
- Stand and listen for ten minutes with the room quiet — The pattern is the diagnosis, and it costs nothing but attention.
- Measure both compartments with a thermometer — It tells you how fast the situation is developing and whether food needs moving now.
- Look at the condenser coil and clean it if it is blanketed — It is the only contributing cause an owner can address, and it is worth doing regardless.
- Then stop and call — A compressor that will not start is not an owner repair, and continued attempts are hard on the motor.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The compressor and the tubing around it run hot during operation. Never work on the sealed system, and if there is oil on the floor beneath the compressor, stop using the appliance: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
Call now rather than later
A cabinet that clicks and will not cool needs a technician promptly, both because food is at risk and because repeated failed starts wear the compressor. Say that it clicks on a regular interval and does not run, because that description identifies the fault class before anybody arrives. Unplug it while you wait, and deal with the food by temperature rather than by appearance.
