The short answer
F56 points at the cooktop user interface — the touchpad — or the wiring to it. The zones are generally capable; what has failed is the way instructions get into the appliance. That distinction matters because it puts the repair at the cheaper end of the cooktop rather than at the power end.

|---|---|
| F56 | There may be a problem with the User Interface (Touchpad), or the associated wiring. |
What you observe, and what to record
- Keys do not respond, or need repeated presses — The interface reading badly rather than the zones failing.
- Whether the code clears when power is removed — Cut the supply for a minute and watch. A code that clears and stays away behaves completely differently from one that returns within a cycle, and nobody but you can observe the difference.
- How long the ${A} runs before the code appears — Immediately from cold, or well into a session — that interval is the most useful single number you can hand a technician.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- Residue or moisture on the panel — First, and always first, because it mimics every interface fault there is and costs nothing to eliminate.
- A connector on the interface harness that has relaxed — Second: the harness is disturbed by any work on the appliance and lives in a space that cycles hot and cold.
- The touchpad or its board has failed — Third: genuine, and identified once the panel is clean, dry and the link has been checked.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean the panel properly and dry it, then retest — Eliminates the commonest cause before anything else is considered.
- Test every key and map which fail — One key, one row, or the whole panel — three different answers.
- Cut power for a minute and watch the start-up — Separates a latched state from a standing fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the panel with soap and water on a cloth, then dry it — Not sprayed cleaner, which runs into the seams and makes things worse.

- Check whether the appliance is still in warranty — Worth two minutes before anyone is paid: the purchase date and the model number decide it, and some components carry longer cover than the appliance.
About 10 min
- Photograph the display with the code showing — Codes are easy to transcribe wrongly and a photograph is not. It also timestamps the fault, which matters if it becomes intermittent.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE — the touchpad is bonded under the glass — It is reached from below, on the live side.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A cooktop is reached from below through the cabinet, never by prying the glass up: it is bonded to its frame and a lifted corner is a cracked top. Surface areas stay hot long after the display clears.
When to call a technician
Call once the panel is clean, dry and cold and keys still fail, especially if the failures form a pattern — one row or one area. Bring that map to the call. A touchpad is a moderate part and the labour is reaching it, so an accurate description saves a diagnostic visit.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F56 for Jenn-Air cooktops in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
