Step 2: Enter diagnostic mode and record codes#
Use the tech sheet's 3-button sequence to enter diagnostics. Whirlpool codes read F#E#, where the F number names the system (F0 sealed system, F1 board communication, F3 sensors, F4 fans, F5 door, F7 motor/actuator, F8 water, F9 defrost) and the E number names the specific error. Record every stored code first — several codes from one system, like F3E1 and F3E2, usually point to shared wiring rather than multiple failures.
Step 3: Access the flagged component#
Disconnect power, then open to the area the code points at. Evaporator and defrost parts sit behind the rear freezer panel (6-8 Torx T20 screws); the control board is behind the fresh-food rear panel; the compressor and condenser are behind the rear lower panel; the ice maker has a single mounting screw; the water valve is at the rear lower panel.
Step 4: Remove the suspect component#
Photograph every wire connection first as your reassembly reference. Release each harness by its locking tab and pull the connector body, never the wires. Back out the mounting screws — most are Torx T20, with some 1/4-inch hex at panels.
Step 5: Confirm the failure before installing#
Prove the old part is bad before spending on a new one. Meter resistance (a heating element reads 20-50 ohms; infinite means open), continuity on switches and sensors, or voltage at the connector to confirm the supply circuit is live. That catches an upstream wiring or board fault before you swap a good part.
Step 6: Install the replacement#
Mount the new part in the exact orientation, seat every harness until it clicks, and tighten screws snug only — Whirlpool's plastic mounting tabs crack if overtightened.
Step 7: Reassemble and clear codes#
Refit panels in reverse, restore power, re-enter diagnostics, and clear the stored codes tied to the repair. Run the part through the diagnostic forced-test, or by normal operation while you watch for correct behavior.
Step 8: Monitor after the repair#
Watch for 24-48 hours. Fresh food should return to about 37 degrees and the freezer to 0 degrees within 24 hours, an ice-maker repair should drop its first batch in a few hours, and the original code should not return. If it does within 48 hours, expect an incomplete repair or a secondary fault.
