Start by asking which maker stopped
On a GE Profile the first question is not what failed but which ice maker failed. Many of these appliances carry one maker in the fresh-food door and a second in the freezer, and the answer splits the diagnosis in two. Both stopped points upstream at the filter or the supply. One stopped points at that maker, its fill tube or the compartment it sits in.
What you are seeing
- One bucket is empty while the other still fills.
- Both buckets are empty and the dispenser still gives water.
- Cubes from the door maker are fused into a slab.
- Production has slowed rather than stopped outright.
- Not this fault: Ice is made but jams in the chute - that is a dispenser and auger fault.
- Not this fault: The whole cabinet is warming - read the not-cooling page, which is more urgent.
Most likely causes, in Profile order
- Not knowing which maker has stopped — Why ranked: First because it decides everything below it. A shared cause and a local cause need completely different checks, and only this tells them apart.
- Filter overdue or unseated, restricting both makers — Why ranked: Second, and the leading cause when both have stopped. The dispenser can trickle at a rate far below what a mold needs to fill.
- Ice compartment in the door warming through a seal or duct — Why ranked: The Profile-specific finding for the door maker. It gives fused cubes and a slow decline rather than an outright stop.
- Fill tube frozen at one mold — Why ranked: Ranked here because it stops one maker completely while the other carries on, which the first check will already have shown.
- Ice maker module failed — Why ranked: Last. It is genuinely less common than the water path, and it stops one maker rather than both.
What to check, in order
- Open both ice compartments and note which is producing and which is not. — Because: Rank one, and it decides whether you are looking upstream at the filter or locally at one maker.
- Dispense water and judge the stream, then reseat the filter. — Because: Rank two, and it is the answer whenever both makers have stopped together.
- Look at the ice in each bucket - loose cubes or a fused slab. — Because: Fusing is rank three and points at the compartment rather than the maker.
- Look into the fill cup behind each mold for a plug of ice. — Because: Rank four is visible and explains one maker that cycles without ever filling.
Checks you can do safely
- Empty both buckets, note the state of the ice in each, and check both again a day later. — N: 1 — Tools: None — Time: a full day
- Dispense into a jug and watch the stream, then twist the filter out and back until it seats firmly and purge air. — N: 2 — Tools: Jug, cartridge if needed — Time: quick
- Check the door ice compartment closes fully and clear any frost around its seal. — N: 3 — Tools: Cloth — Time: quick
- Look into the fill cup at the back of each mold. If capped with ice, leave the compartment open to warm or use a warm damp cloth. — N: 4 — Tools: Cloth, warm water — Time: moderate
- Stop rule: Stop here. Testing a valve coil, a mold heater or a module means metering live terminals, and that is service work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water off before disturbing the supply line. Never chip ice from a mold or a fill tube with a blade. Do not force a frosted ice compartment door - warm it and let the ice release.
When this becomes a service call
Both makers stay empty with a new filter and a strong dispenser stream. A fill tube refreezes within days of being cleared. Frost keeps returning around the door ice compartment. One maker cycles continuously without ever harvesting.
