What no cooling usually means on a GE
On a GE refrigerator, poor cooling is usually a heat-rejection or an airflow problem rather than a sealed-system failure. A condenser area packed with dust makes the appliance run constantly without holding temperature, and a fresh-food damper that has stopped opening warms the fridge while the freezer stays perfect. Both are ahead of the compressor, and the first is entirely owner-serviceable.
What you are seeing
- The fridge is warm while the freezer holds ice cream firm.
- The appliance runs almost continuously and still drifts warm.
- Cooling improves for a day after the doors are left open, then fades.
- The cabinet or the floor beneath it feels unusually warm.
- Not this fault: Both compartments are warm and the cabinet is silent - that points at the sealed system.
- Not this fault: Only the ice maker has stopped - read the ice production page instead.
Most likely causes, in GE order
- Condenser area packed with dust, hair or debris — Why ranked: First because it is common, entirely owner-serviceable, and it makes every other fault on this list worse while it is present.
- Fresh-food damper stuck shut or its control failed — Why ranked: The GE-specific finding. It produces the warm-fridge, cold-freezer split exactly, and nothing about the appliance sounds wrong while it does.
- Defrost system failing and frosting the evaporator — Why ranked: Ranked here because it gives the pattern of cooling that recovers after the doors are left open and then fails again days later.
- Door not sealing, or held ajar by a drawer or a stored item — Why ranked: Free to correct, and it explains a cabinet that runs constantly and still cannot hold temperature.
- Evaporator fan or the sealed system — Why ranked: Last. A failed fan is audible by its absence, and a sealed-system fault leaves both compartments warm and the cabinet quiet.
What to check, in order
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight and compare them. — Because: A warm fridge with a cold freezer is airflow; both warm moves you straight to rank five.
- Pull the appliance out and look at the condenser area at the base or the rear. — Because: Rank one is visible, free to fix, and it changes the behaviour of everything else.
- Find the fresh-food vent and feel for air moving out of it. — Because: No airflow at that vent with a cold freezer is rank two, which is the GE-specific answer.
- Test both door seals with a sheet of paper and check nothing holds a door ajar. — Because: Rank four costs nothing and explains a cabinet that never stops running.

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (-18 °C) or below; discard anything warmer for long. Never chip frost from an evaporator with a blade; a pierced refrigerant line ends the appliance. A refrigerator is a heavy appliance - walk it out slowly with a second person.
When this becomes a service call
No air comes from the fresh-food vent with the freezer cold and the condenser clean. Cooling recovers after a manual defrost and fails again within days. Both compartments are warm and the cabinet is silent. The appliance runs continuously and still cannot hold 40 °F (4 °C).
