Frigidaire Refrigerator Sensor (Thermistor) Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire refrigerators use NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors to monitor temperature in the fresh food and freezer compartments. The control board reads the thermistor resistance to determine the current temperature and decide when to run the compressor, when to activate the defrost heater, and (on EvenTemp Gallery models) when to open or close the zone damper.
Sensor Locations
| Sensor | Location | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh food thermistor | Clipped to the evaporator cover or mounted on the rear wall of the fresh food compartment | Reports fresh food temperature to the board |
| Freezer thermistor | Clipped to the evaporator or mounted on the freezer rear wall | Reports freezer temperature to the board |
| Evaporator thermistor (some models) | Attached directly to the evaporator tubing | Tells the board when the evaporator is cold enough for defrost termination |
| Ambient thermistor (Gallery/Professional) | Near the control board | Adjusts compressor operation based on room temperature |
EvenTemp Gallery models may have 3–4 thermistors for independent zone control. Standard models typically have 2 (fresh food + freezer).

Symptoms of Thermistor Failure
- Refrigerator too cold — the thermistor reads a falsely warm temperature, so the board runs the compressor constantly. Food freezes in the fresh food section
- Refrigerator too warm — the thermistor reads a falsely cold temperature, so the board rarely runs the compressor
- Temperature fluctuates wildly — the thermistor has intermittent contact, reporting erratic readings
- Error code on display (Gallery/Professional) — SY EF, SH, or numeric codes indicating sensor out-of-range
Testing a Thermistor
- Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the thermistor.
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector.
- Multimeter on resistance at room temperature (approximately 68°F / 20°C): expected reading is approximately 5,000–15,000 ohms (model-specific — check service sheet).
- Place the thermistor in ice water: resistance should increase significantly (NTC = resistance inversely proportional to temperature).
- If reading is infinite, zero, or does not change with temperature — replace the thermistor.

Replacement
- Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the failed thermistor.
- Release the thermistor from its mounting clip or adhesive pad.
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector (trace the wire to find the connector — it may be behind a panel).
- Connect the new thermistor. Mount in the same position. Ensure good thermal contact with the surface it is measuring.
- Plug in. Wait 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.
Tools: Phillips #2 (for panel access), multimeter. Time: 15–25 minutes.
The Real Cost of DIY

Common Misdiagnosis
"Refrigerator not cooling" is often blamed on the compressor or board, but a $10 failed thermistor can mimic these expensive failures. Always test thermistors before condemning costly components. A thermistor that reports "already cold" prevents the board from running the compressor — the compressor and board are both fine.
