Frigidaire Refrigerator 5Y EF: Evaporator Fan Not Running
What Is Happening Inside
The evaporator fan sits behind the rear panel inside the freezer compartment. Its job is to circulate cold air from the evaporator coils through the freezer and (via a damper) into the fresh food section. Without this fan, cold air stays trapped near the coils. The freezer temperature climbs, and the fresh food section gets no cooling at all.
5Y EF fires when the control board commands the evaporator fan motor to run but detects no rotation. On Frigidaire refrigerators with EvenTemp twin evaporators (Gallery and Professional Series), each compartment has its own evaporator fan, and 5Y EF identifies which one has failed through the error sub-code.

Quick Check: Ice Buildup
Before testing electrical components, remove the freezer rear panel (usually four to six screws). If the evaporator coils are encased in a thick sheet of ice and the fan blade is frozen in place, the root cause is a defrost system failure. The fan motor itself may be fine, but ice prevents rotation. Defrost manually (unplug the refrigerator for 24 hours with the doors open, towels on the floor) and then investigate why the defrost cycle is not melting ice as designed (defrost heater, defrost timer, or defrost thermostat).
Electrical Diagnosis (If No Ice Buildup)
- Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the freezer rear panel.
- Disconnect the fan motor connector (two or three pin, depending on model).
- Measure motor resistance: expect 4-20 ohms. Infinite means the motor winding is open. Under 1 ohm suggests a short.
- If motor resistance is normal, check for mechanical binding. Spin the fan blade by hand. It should turn freely with minimal resistance. If stiff, the motor bearings have seized.
- If motor and blade are fine, check wiring continuity from the motor connector back to the board.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Fan Motor Replacement
Part: model-specific, typically $30-$60.
- Unplug refrigerator. Remove freezer shelves and rear panel.
- Disconnect the fan motor connector. Remove the mounting screws (two to four).
- Remove the fan blade from the motor shaft (press fit or clip).
- Install the blade onto the new motor. Mount the motor. Reconnect.
- Reinstall the rear panel and shelves. Plug in. The fan should start within 30 seconds of plugging in if the compressor is running.

EvenTemp Dual-Fan Systems
Gallery and Professional Series models with EvenTemp technology use separate evaporator coils and fans for the freezer and fresh food sections. The board monitors each independently. 5Y EF on these models specifies which fan has failed. Both fans are accessible through their respective rear panels.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

FAQ
Will 5Y EF cause food to spoil? Yes, if not addressed within 24-48 hours. The fresh food section loses cooling entirely because the damper relies on the fan to push cold air from the freezer.
Can I hear when the evaporator fan fails? Often yes. The fan runs most of the time the compressor runs. If your refrigerator suddenly becomes quieter but the compressor still hums, the fan has likely stopped.
Is 5Y EF different from 5Y CF? Yes. 5Y EF is the evaporator fan (freezer). 5Y CF is the condenser fan (underneath/behind the unit). Different locations, different functions.
