Frigidaire Refrigerator Compressor Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
The compressor is the heart of the Frigidaire refrigerator's sealed cooling system. It is a conventional reciprocating compressor mounted at the rear bottom of the unit — Electrolux does not use proprietary linear or inverter compressors on Frigidaire-branded models, which means replacement compressors are widely available from multiple suppliers.
Compressor replacement is a professional-only repair. It requires EPA Section 608 certification to handle refrigerant, specialized brazing equipment, vacuum pump, manifold gauges, and refrigerant recovery equipment. This guide helps you diagnose whether the compressor is actually the failed component before calling a technician.
How the Frigidaire Compressor Works
The compressor pumps refrigerant through the sealed system: it compresses low-pressure gas from the evaporator (inside the freezer) into high-pressure gas, pushes it through the condenser (underneath or behind the unit), where it releases heat and becomes liquid, then through the expansion device back into the evaporator, where it absorbs heat and cools the interior. This cycle repeats continuously.
Gallery models (FGHB/FGSS prefix) with EvenTemp twin evaporators have a slightly more complex sealed system — two evaporators, two expansion devices, but still one compressor.

Symptoms of Compressor Failure
- Refrigerator and freezer both warm — the compressor is not pumping refrigerant. Both compartments lose cooling simultaneously (unlike an evaporator fan failure, which affects the fresh food section more than the freezer)
- Compressor running continuously but not cooling — the compressor runs (you hear the hum from the rear) but there is a sealed system leak, restricted capillary tube, or worn compressor valves. The unit cannot reach the target temperature
- Clicking at the rear followed by silence — the compressor attempts to start but trips on its overload protector. The motor draws excessive current, overheats, the protector opens, it cools, tries again. This click-silence pattern repeats every 5–10 minutes
- Loud buzzing from the rear — the compressor motor is trying to start but is mechanically seized. The start relay energizes the motor winding, but the piston cannot move
- No sound at all from the rear — the start relay, overload protector, or compressor winding has failed completely. No current flows to the compressor
Before Condemning the Compressor
Compressor replacement costs $400–$1,200. Before assuming the compressor is dead:
- Test the start relay — a small device plugged onto the compressor terminals at the rear. Remove it (unplug the fridge first), shake it gently. If it rattles, the internal contact has broken — replace the relay ($15–$30). This is the #1 misdiagnosis that leads to unnecessary compressor replacement
- Test the overload protector — the disc mounted on top of or next to the start relay. Multimeter on continuity at room temperature: should show continuity. Open circuit = blown overload ($10–$20)
- Check the condenser coils — if the coils (underneath the fridge, pull-out via front grill) are caked with dust, pet hair, and debris, the compressor overheats trying to reject heat through clogged coils. Clean the coils and the compressor may recover
- Test compressor windings — unplug fridge, remove start relay. The compressor has 3 terminals (Common, Start, Run). Use a multimeter on resistance. Typical readings: C–R = 5–15 ohms, C–S = 10–25 ohms, R+S should approximately equal C–S reading. Infinite on any pair = open winding. Test each terminal to the compressor housing for ground fault — any reading = grounded winding

Compressor Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| OEM compressor | $200–$500 |
| Electrolux cross-reference | same range |
| Refrigerant (R134a or R600a) | included in labor |
| Professional labor (brazing, vacuum, charge) | $200–$500 |
| Start relay + overload (replace with compressor) | $15–$40 |
| Professional total | $400–$1,200 |
There is no DIY option for compressor replacement.
Repair vs. Replace Decision
| Refrigerator Age | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Under 5 years | Replace compressor — check manufacturer warranty first |
| 5–8 years | Replace compressor if sealed system warranty covers it |
| 8–12 years | Evaluate total unit cost. If refrigerator was $800–$1,200 new, a $600+ compressor repair may not be worthwhile |
| Over 12 years | New refrigerator is almost always better value |
Gallery and Professional models with original purchase prices of $1,500+ justify compressor repair at longer ages than Standard models.

Manufacturer Warranty Note
Frigidaire offers a 5-year sealed system warranty on many models (covers compressor, evaporator, condenser, tubing). Check your model's warranty status before paying for a compressor. Some models have a 10-year limited warranty on the sealed system. Find warranty details on the rating plate (inside the fresh food compartment) or by calling Frigidaire with your model and serial number.
Condenser Coil Cleaning — The Prevention
Dirty condenser coils are the leading cause of compressor failure on Frigidaire refrigerators. The coils are underneath the unit, accessed by removing the front grill (pull or snap off at the bottom front). Use a condenser coil brush (about $8 at hardware stores) and a vacuum. Clean every 6 months. Frigidaire units are especially sensitive to dirty condensers — the coil placement underneath the unit makes them a magnet for pet hair and dust bunnies.

FAQ
How do I know if my Frigidaire refrigerator compressor is bad?
Click-silence pattern from the rear, continuous running without cooling, or no sound at all. Test the start relay first ($15-$30 fix) before assuming compressor failure ($400+).
Can I replace a Frigidaire refrigerator compressor myself?
No. EPA 608 certification is required to handle refrigerant. The repair requires brazing, vacuum pump, and manifold gauges.
Does Frigidaire have a warranty on the compressor?
Many models include a 5-year sealed system warranty. Some have 10-year limited coverage. Check your rating plate or call Frigidaire with model and serial.
How do I prevent compressor failure?
Clean the condenser coils every 6 months. Dirty coils cause the compressor to overwork and overheat. Also ensure adequate clearance behind and around the refrigerator for heat dissipation.
